Brownfield High School juniors and freshmen posted low TASP mastery rates with 53 percent of 155 juniors and 35 percent of 181 freshmen passing all three test sections. The statewide October 1990 rate was 74.3 percent, and the test serves to guide remedial help for college readiness.
City Council called a May 4 election for four seats Districts 4 and 5 and two at large. Don Park named election judge with Dennis McCutcheon as alternate, Zelma Miller as absentee clerk, and Mary Jo Collins and Paula Phillips as election deputies. Council renewed Emergicare contract with 3 percent city contribution increase to about $87,000 to raise service to paramedic level.
Brownfield High School seniors Brian Woodson and Belinda Jo Cargill are named Optimist Club Texan Texanne for January. Woodson, son of Dan and Nancy Woodson, has starred in Spirit of the Plains and Red Express bands, earned multiple district and regional titles, and placed in state contests. He is an active honor roll student, church youth leader, and FCA member aiming to graduate in the top 15 percent of his class.
The eighth annual conservation workshop gathers Terry County and South Plains participants at the Terry County Show Barn on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A noon meal is served. Sessions cover conservation tillage, LEPA irrigation, water management, conservation compliance, the 1990 Farm Bill, and practical tillage methods with several experts and a lunch sponsor.
Residents in a west central Brownfield neighborhood report a surge in burglaries targeting elderly residents. Police Chief J T Churchwell says patrols have been increased citywide while Lt Roy Rice notes several cases cleared this week with juvenile suspects detained and more investigations continuing.
