Brownfield School administrators led by Superintendent O R Douglas criticized Governor Connally’s plan to shift teacher pay raise costs to local districts. He warned Brownfield would lose funds under the plan, detailing a net state-to-district change and highlighting differences with the Texas Teachers Association proposed $45 monthly raise. The meeting covered curriculum, enrollments up 32, and multiple bids, with new bus and vehicle purchases approved. A called session was set to discuss the Citizens’ Tax Study and other pending business.
The Terry County Commissioners Court met Monday and authorized the purchase of two vehicles and a 7500 outlay for the initial phase of upgrading stands and bleachers at the rodeo arena. These items were among the major expenditures discussed during the busy session.
The minutes note a 7500 expenditure approved by commissioners amid transfers from the Public Building Fund to the Park Bond interest and Sinking Fund and 12000 from the Road and Bridge Fund to four precinct funds. The latter was to be split to give each precinct 3000.
The Terry County Commissioners debated unfinished business including school board matters, potential board nominees, and liability insurance for buses. They discussed rodeo stands funding, bids for sheriff department vehicles, oil tax assessments, and several fund transfers. A California Arizona tour for the Farm and Ranch Management program was approved with partial funding, and First National Bank of Brownfield was named county depository.
Frank A Patterson, leading Patterson Customer Relations and Sales Clinic, spoke at Monday noon Brownfield Jaycees. He covered salesmanship points and proper sales preparation as the group discussed the upcoming Terry County Junior Livestock Show. President Mark Wyatt led the business session with guests Frank Harmon, Dick Fletcher, and Pearl Poteet of Lamesa in attendance.
Temperatures to average 2 7 degrees below normal with a high near 66 and low around 40. A gradual warming trend begins Friday with little or no precipitation.
Services are pending for Mrs Jettie Sue Merryman aged 19 who died suddenly at her aunt’s home in Odessa. She was pronounced dead at 7 45 a m after arriving physician. She had been visiting since Sunday. Survived by husband two sons Phillip Shane two years and Brent Myron two weeks, her parents Walter J Adams of Fort Worth and Leona Prestridge of Gresham Oregon, two brothers Rodney Odessa and Michael Gresham, and sister Regina of Gresham Oregon.

Voters in Wellman Independent School District head to the polls April 2 to fill three board seats. Incumbents Carl Golden and Gerald Bevers seek re election while Elmo Adair declines. Victor Watts has filed, with March 3 filing deadline. Absentee voting March 6 to 30 in the tax collector’s office at the high school. Election in the Wellman High School Board Room.
Brownfield city police report Jose Angel De Leon Jr. age 19 gave himself up and is jailed on $5,000 bond, charged with assault with intent to murder after a Friday night shooting injuring Martin Marginez 25 who received a .22 bullet wound through his tongue. Marginez is hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Brownfield General. The report also details thefts, petty crimes, traffic incidents, and multiple arrests in the area.
