State Representative E L Short says 300 million of 999 million surplus has been spent. He notes Common Cause top goal utilities commission and opposes ERA repeal efforts. Local races hot with six for Brownfield School Board three seats and six for city council. filing deadlines March 1 for city and March 5 for school trustees.
The Brownfield City Council approved a public hearing on an assessment paying program for April 3 during the regular meeting led by Mayor Pro-Tem Odell Sears. They endorsed a $200,000 community development project to north of downtown, pending SPAG approval and a March 1 mailing to Dallas.
Brownfield High varsity tennis dominates Estacado 12-2 to raise District 3-AAA Round Robin record to 46-10. Players Danny Gibbs Gayland Ingram and Hadyn Bourn starred as the Cubs secured the title with a lopsided win over the Matadors.

Robert Fuller 17 faces robbery by assault charges after an incident at Brownfield High. Fred Goree reported intruders on February 15 taking $65. A separate beating near Wellman left a youth injured and hospitalized. deputies investigate with no update Friday night.
Brownfield American Legion held its annual Law Officer Appreciation Banquet on Thursday night. Captain Lee Bartlett Jr introduced Senator Kent Hance who spoke to attendees. Maurice Martin led the pledge of allegiance as Hance received cuff links and praise from Commander L. D. Bailey. Plains State Bank’s Terry Bacon and Ty Field arranged Hance’s flight to the event.
Meadow city council scheduled an election for April 5 with three council seats to be filled. Incumbents Carlton White and Joe Burleson seek re election while C W Brooks will not run due to other commitments. Filing deadline is March 4 at city hall.
