County Agent Jim Foy promotes the Terry County Junior Livestock Show to be held March 7-9 in Brownfield. Beef prices are forecast at 45 to 47 cents a pound with a livestock auction on March 9 at the county show barn. Buyers can purchase half beef or share with neighbors, and similar options may apply to pork for those not wanting a full animal.
An old fashioned gospel meeting ends with a humorous testimonial as an elderly woman notes her two teeth hit, blessing the Lord. The scene, described as a Thursday moment, reflects a lighthearted, faith‑filled atmosphere during a community gathering.
Terry County officials joined 115 Texas counties at the sixth annual County Judges and Commissioners Conference on the Texas A M campus. Attendees included County Judge Raymond Simms and County Auditor L D Bailey. The three day event, sponsored by the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas and Texas Agricultural Extension service, focused on current county government problems.
The Plains Cotton Growers Association sponsors a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Party House with Monroe Bowden Speedy Morehead and Kelly Mac Sears representatives presenting the program. Don Anderson of Crosbyton will be guest speaker on boll weevil damage in Crosby County. The public is urged to attend.
Alice Toliver, nine, daughter of Coke and 1109 E Buckley, captured the crowd with Alice Blue Gown to win 50 prize dollars at the Lions Club Talent Tournament. She pledged the prize to the Crippled Children's Camp in Kerrville. Brownfield high school division winner featured a five piece band. other divisions saw levelland and Brownfield acts.
The Brownfield School Board of Trustees schedules a Monday 7 30 p m meeting in the high school library The agenda includes the superintendent report curriculum personnel enrollment and business reports Unfinished business covers disposition of a previous school site option New business lists a tentative economic index assignment and a Texas Tech Placement Office review of six communications A delinquent taxpayer list gun tax penalties discussion and an analysis of the Vocation Education Act are also on tap.
Bill Noble was elected president of the Brownfield Rotary Club in a regular session. Other officers for the year include Carol Collier as first vice president Harry Elam as second vice president and Mack Ross as secretary treasurer. Installation will be in July. The Premiers provided the program with visitors Hershel Timmons and Kenneth Purtell.
Snowfall delivered 2.5 inches with 0.03 inch moisture per Radio KTFY. Temperatures dipped to 11 degrees Friday morning then rose to near warm by afternoon. Snowmelt created ice and mud. month total rose to 0.14 inch, far below February average of 0.70 inch.
The Terry County Commissioners Court will meet in regular session at 10 a.m. Monday in the Courthouse with County Judge Raymond Simms presiding.
Two Terry County meetings elect John Kendrick as permanent chairman to work with Ed L Reed and George W McCleskey on a plan to file no pit orders with the Texas Water Pollution Control Board in Austin March 4 to curb brine dumping. Reed asks farmers to bring water samples with land descriptions to the local Chamber of Commerce by Friday for Midland analysis and testimony.
Reed says show cause proceeding will determine delays and extensions for no pit orders. Terry County to share financial burden with Dawson and possibly other high plains counties. The hearing marks Area Two’s first session and aims to justify timely action.
Major companies oppose disposal of brine and funds are needed urgently to carry out plans. Finance committees note accounts set up at local banks for contributions. The Dawson County Association expanded its board during a Friday meeting attended by City Manager Renee Jones City Secretary Jake Geren and Mayor Jess McWhorter with officers H A Noret Bill Reid and Pat Ryan present.
Four highway incidents in Texas tied to snow and ice disrupted traffic but caused no major injuries. Curtis Lee Ritchie’s Cloverlake Dairy truck rolled on a county road toward Brownfield Country Club. damage and cargo loss reported. John Henry Reed’s pickup was rear ended on State Highway 137, with minor injuries and vehicle damage. C Robertson’s Tokio Chevrolet overturned on ice near Yoakum County, injuries minor. Homer Sudderth’s pickup also rolled near Ropesville with minor injuries.
Temperatures are expected to average five degrees below normal with a chance of snow today into Monday. Colder weekend followed by a warming trend midweek. Normal highs around 56 and lows near 28.
Members of the Terry County Young Farmers Association met in regular session to hear Walter Meyer Texas Farm Bureau Live Commodity Director speak on Building Markets for Texas Products. Meyer outlined global market trends and marketing strategies derived from his Europe trip. Eddie Bingham led a short business meeting after the program.
The City Council of Brownfield will hold a session on Thursday at 9 a.m. in City Hall with Mayor Jess McWherter presiding.
