A Jaycee luncheon demonstration shows how rumors spread as five people recount a tale, reducing truth with each retelling. The note mentions John N. Hopkins of Post, Texas as a hypothetical Senate candidate, while J T Adams urges Christians to engage in politics and voting.
Two residents have filed for three vacancies on the Brownfield Board of Education. Incumbent Robert Baumgardner and Truett Flache have filed to date. Trustees whose terms expire April 1 are Baumgardner Burnett Jr. and James Thurman. Filing deadline is March 2 with the election April 1, 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the county superintendent’s courthouse office.
The statewide 1 30 p m Saturday alert mobilized Battery B of the 2nd Howitzer Battalion 133rd Artillery to 155 mm weapons. Captain Fred Adams said 81 percent answered muster Day 1963 with 50 percent in about an hour. The drill moved civilians into soldiers totaling 20 000 region wide.
Mrs. W T Patton, a longtime Terry resident aged 82, died Tuesday night at her home 619 East Hill. Services were incomplete Wednesday at Brownfield Funeral Home. Survived by two sons Grady Patton of Route 5 and Alvis Patton of Route 4 and two daughters Mrs S B Johnson of St Louis Ill and Mrs Irene Beauchamp of Fort Worth.
Jaycee-ettes plan a bake sale Saturday at 9 a.m. at Piggly Wiggly with cakes and pies for sale. Proceeds go to Girl Scout Troop 309 to fund summer camp, deliveries available by calling Mrs. Leo Hall at 2359.
Kiwanis announces its annual pancake day at the junior high cafeteria with two serving windows from 6 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 8 in the evening. Tickets cost 50 cents and proceeds go to the Underprivileged Children's Fund.
Charlie Kulms called Doris Elaine Dorsett from Wolfforth to say he would not attend the planned wedding at 1121 West Powell due to Monday’s snowstorm. The blizzard inconvenienced many, and the couple’s plans were postponed as reported in Section 2.
Three Terry County Farm Bureau leaders Loyd Wayne Yowell E H Farrar and H L King will attend a two day conference in Austin on legislative and Texas Farm Bureau problems. More than 200 farmers and ranchers are expected to attend the two day meeting at the Stephen F Austin Hotel.
Jerry Goble of 716 East Broadway is at home after six months in the army. He completed two months of basic training at Fort Ord California and four months at Fort Sill Oklahoma. He works with his father in Goble Furniture Company.
A new Young Farmers of Texas chapter will be organized at Brownfield High School in the Agriculture Building at 8 p.m. today with state advisor E. L. Tiner present to assist. Walter Meyer notes about 60 farmers under 35 in Terry County are eligible joining, and the group will meet monthly to study farm management, insect control, income tax, arc welding, and shop work. If interest grows, Texas A&M will send experts for up to five nights of teaching.
GOP candidate John Tower told about 100 Terry County Republicans at The Party House that Americans risk a benevolent dictatorship if they rely on the federal government. He urged conservative ideals, opposing Kennedy’s New Frontier and federal subsidies while pledging to govern himself and his community. Goldwater sent regrets, and Terry County Republicans held their first fund-raising dinner for a Senate race.
Tommy Wilson of 104 West Reppte was appointed to succeed Lee Loftis as secretary of the Terry County Bowling Association. Boyd Noel, president of the association, made the appointment after Loftis resigned.
Terry County residents are urged to attend a 3 pm Tuesday session in the County Judge Roy d A Simms office to organize plans for the Civil War Centennial observance in Texas. Officers will be chosen and a date set. open to all Civil War veterans descendants.
Mr and Mrs W A Wagner of 712 East Lake returned Sunday from San Marcos where they attended funeral services for his sister Mrs Jim Wagner.
The ninth annual Tournament of Talent starts at 7 30 p m in the Brownfield high school auditorium with divisions for elementary Negro junior high and both high school and out of school. The Crystals perform as featured entertainment both nights directed by Herb Chesshir with O R Douglas and MCs L G Smith James Glasscock Ed Crow. Admission 50 cents children 1 for adults. A cake auction and Friday grand winner cap the events.
A young couple, Jerry Browning and Linda Langford Browning, escaped possible death from carbon monoxide in a garage apartment at 105 W Cardwell. Two open flames were burning full blast as Linda fell ill and Jerry, after eating, fainted, locking the door. Parents knocked, but entry failed. both neighbors were found unconscious inside. See No. 2 Page 8.
