FDIC representatives discussed the Brownfield State Bank and Trust takeover on Friday during an invited bid session. Fourteen banks were invited and nine responded, signaling strong local interest as the Brownfield area shows potential.
Howard Yandell of Lubbock is named president and chief executive of the newly formed Brownfield State Bank after serving as president of First National Bank and holding roles at the FNB and Trust Co. He discusses the bank’s mission to preserve Brownfield’s banking tradition during a press conference while the Trust Co. closes and FDIC places the bank in receivership with American State Financial bid accepted.
After a four hour and 25 minute executive session, the Brownfield ISD board extended the contracts of five BISD directors, five principals, and two assistant principals for one year. The action, taken by board president Rusty Andrews, followed approval of a bilingual teacher appointment and ended in a split vote with Andrews casting the deciding yes.
Potential officeholders for four Terry County school boards and two city councils have two weeks to file by March 7 for the April 7 elections. Terry Memorial Hospital Board’s race is also set for April 7 with a filing deadline of 5 p.m. March 12. Rundowns list candidates filed so far. Brownfield School Board places six and seven, held by Janice Knox and Tom Hardy, are becoming vacant.
Yoakum County's Annual Junior Livestock Show drew 309 animals at the Yoakum County Agricultural Center. Four grand champions were named Kyle Stephens lambs Nikki McGinty calves Chris Gravitt heifers and Melissa Teaff swine. Reserve champions included Keith Earnest Terri Spears Kristi Dor they and Jay Rushing. Showmanship awards went to Terri Spears calves Kevin Hart swine and Bobby Crider lambs. Alisa Williams was crowned Yoakum County Junior Livestock Show Queen during Saturday ceremonies.
Plains residents Randal Ross and Deryle Hobbs keep four ostrich hens on open plains north of Plains, Texas. Oscar Ostrich has adapted to West Texas weather, with two birds dying and plans to sell future chicks. Ostriches stand up to eight feet, weigh about 300 pounds, run 30 to 40 mph, and eggs fetch 25 to 50 dollars.
