Area Stock Shows Open With Weigh-in Thursday

The 1982 Terry County Livestock Show opens at 1 p.m. at the county barn with 251 animals entered: 199 swine 38 lambs and 14 steers. Weigh-in ends at 8 p.m. and judging starts at 8 a.m. Thursday followed by classes in this order Fria e ontes lambs and steers.

Chambers Is Oratorical Winner at Brownfield Contest

Brownfield High School sophomore Todd Chambers won the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest with You and I and Tomorrow. His win advances him to the zone contest. Carey White chaired the event. Other Brownfield students Troy Draper, Brad Bell, and three girls Shelly McMeans, Stormie Shelhamer, and Michelle Davis competed.

Jaws of Life Rescue Vehicle Donated to Brownfield Police

Brownfield Police Reserve has used the Jaws of Life on ten accidents in one year and rescued live victims in five cases. A rescue van, fully equipped, was donated by Clovis Cochran along with funds from local merchants and citizens. The device and crew training enable rapid response to major Terry County crashes.

Lynn Holly Wins High School Division at Lions Talent Contest

Lynn Holly led a Friday evening performance at the Middle School Auditorium earning the High School Division crown at the Annual Lions Tournament of Talent. Lions President Darwin Cargill presented the certificate as the club sold pies and cakes, with United Food Stores purchasing the traditional large cake for 250 dollars.

Water Taxes and Land Dominate Brownfield City Council

Brownfield city council approved a 15 percent penalty on delinquent taxes as of July 1 to fund the tax collection firm. Delinquents pay seven percent in February, rising monthly to 18 percent by July. The council also granted Jeff Kisor’s request to transfer city owned farmland he tended to Don Sales, per City Manager Jake Geron.

Health Department Holds Hearing on City Waste Site

The Texas Department of Health held a public hearing Wednesday on a new 19 acre waste disposal site south of town adjoining the future city sewage plant. City Manager Jake Geron described fencing, portable barriers, and manual litter cleanups, and noted the site’s proximity to private property while addressing the need for the facility.

Fulford Pettigrew Tabbed Outstanding

Two Brownfield women Sharon Kay Fulford and Mary Helen Pettigrew are named in the 1981 Outstanding Young Women of America. Fulford, an assistant bank cashier, serves on local American Cancer Society and American Heart Association boards and pursues math and data processing studies. Pettigrew, wife of Tom, is a 1966 Brownfield High School graduate and 1975 TTU alumna with additional West Texas State attendance. they share a daughter Pebble.

Brownfield Crime Information Inc. will pay a 300 dollar reward for information leading to arrests in two burglaries on February 16, 1982. Larry's Chemicals was entered by breaking a door glass and cash was stolen. Reed's Phillips 66 Service Station was entered by breaking a window with several pocket knives taken.
