The Brownfield Lions open the ith edition of the TOT tonight with 25 acts on the first night and 18 on Friday across elementary colored junior high and high school divisions. Thirteen prizes total including grand champ. $50 grand prize, $15 $10 $5 per division. Proceeds go to Lions Club charities and Kerrville camp.
Local Lions Club hosts a Talent Tour to showcase area youth and raise funds for club projects and Kerrville Children’s Camp. The Brownfield Jaycees announce the second annual Miss South Plains Beauty Pageant set for June 8 in the Brownfield High School auditorium. Open to women 18 to 28 in Terry Gaines and Yoakum counties, with judge criteria of beauty talent and personality.
Dr. J P Jones South Plains Health Department reports higher than usual flu among private patients though area schools show normal absenteeism. He cannot identify virus types without lab resources and urges boosters for those previously vaccinated. Colonial Heights elementary runs 85 to 90 percent attendance while others stay near 93 percent.
Terry County tax assessor collector J. D. Akers said the office has sold 815 passenger plates since Feb 1, far below its 5,000 annual target, prompting a warning of a possible last minute rush and urging early purchases. He noted truck registrations lag and asked truckers to register fleets and bring last year’s license receipts and titles.
Joe Henry Richardson, 17, released Feb 1 after a 30 day theft sentence, returned to jail later that day on two forgery counts for writing checks totaling $69.50. He was arrested at his Brownwood home and held on $2,600 bond. The same incident involved a scuffle in which Ben Trevino, 43, was shot in the left arm as a handgun discharged.
Local man Dyer of 1303 East Main narrowly saved his right foot when a heavy boot locked a conveyor shaft during a stripping operation at J Harris plants. He suffered two broken leg places and leg burns, later enduring multiple surgeries and traction. After recovery he hopes for light work in weeks and plans to start own machine business in fall. He is married to Mrs. Anna D. Waldrop, with three children Debra Gail Danny Ray and Gaylan Shelby.
Dr Maurice L Winston a local dentist is in Brownfield General Hospital after a heart attack last week His offices at 602 W Tate will be closed temporarily as he recovers.
