Our Town notes a new Public Safety Building praised for modern design and utility. Citizens call for cleanup of a vacant lot at 215 West Lake while GAO reports $232.8 million in federal savings from its 1968 audits across 13 departments and nine agencies.
Bruce Zorns Brownfield State Bank and Trust Company announced in a monthly meeting that Donald C. Cross has been promoted to assistant vice president and assistant cashier. Cross will lead a security program under Public Law 90-389. He joined the bank in 1950 after earlier roles and is active in church and Masonic groups.
A large crowd visited the remodeled Public Safety Building at 120 North Fifth Street for an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 375 guests toured with help from Police Auxiliary and City Police, as well as the Civil Defense Headquarters hosts. Out-of-town guests traveled from Lamesa Sea graves Lubbock Memphis Tenn Wellman Meadow San Angelo Amarillo Morton Simmons Island Ga and Post.
Congressman George Mahon reports HUD officials approve an Urban Planning Grant of 16 340 to Brownfield. The state receives two thirds of the total cost with 8 170 local funds supplement, funding planning work for 18 months.
Merchants celebrate George Washington's birthday with sales, Brownfield Bonus Bucks, and a pie promotion. Customers can win Cherry Pies and Browfield Gifts through store drawings with names entered in a central hopper for a $5 Brownfield prize.
Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce presents its annual Distinguished Service Reward Banquet and Bosses Night at 7:30 p.m. in Holiday House Party Room. Guest speaker is R B McAlister of Lubbock District 76 Place Three. Awards include Outstanding Young Man 1968 and new categories Outstanding Young Partner and Educator. Lanny Webb chairs with Jack Greenfield, Cargill, and Truman Bridges assisting.
A Tuesday 4 25 p m collision in the northbound lane at First and Main sent Georgia Rae Sims to a local clinic for treatment and release. Preston Lee Darby drove the 1955 Chevrolet truck that hit Sims 1953 Chevrolet. the truck driver was uninjured.
Saturday is the deadline for entering livestock in the Terry County Junior Livestock Show to be held March 14 15 in the County Barn. The annual show is co sponsored by the Terry County Farmers and the Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Brownfield Lions Club presents its 17th Tournament of Talent at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Tonight features Miss South Plains Nancy Turner with balance beam act as part of a two night event starting at 7 30 p.m. each night. Winners in elementary junior high high school and out of town divisions compete Friday for a grand prize trip for four to Astro World Houston plus prizes of 30 20 and 10 dollars in each division. Proceeds from Friday cake auction go to Crippled Children's Camp. Ed Crow Howard McIlroy and Robert Levo serve as emcees.
Howard Henson Post 269 American Legion will hold its 32nd annual Oratorical Contest at 7 30 p m in the American Legion Hall. Two Union High School students Fred Jackson and Donna Steinrath have entered. Dinner by the Auxiliary precedes the free event open to all secondary school students.
Kiwanis Club met at noon Tuesday at the Holiday House with Don Burda president in charge. Discussion covered the annual Pancake Supper with Johnny Willis and Tommy Jones named co chairs and several members assisting. Date to be announced. Members then toured the Public Safety Building during its open house.
