George T. George Leads First Terry County Council Meeting

State Representative Jesse T. George chaired the initial Terry County Legislative Community Council session at Brownfield Savings and Loan. A large non partisan crowd discussed bills including city sales tax liquor by the drink and pay raises while George voiced opposition to pari mutuel betting and urged clear explanations of constitutional amendments. Co chairmen were John Kendrick and Virgil Crawford with Mrs A E Roberts secretary.

Brownfield Council Sets April 4 Election

Brownfield city council declared the regular election for April 4 with Jess Bryant as presiding judge and Tommy Hicks as alternate. They will appoint two more citizens to join them. The meeting also covered zoning board vacancy, a proposed joint meeting with county officials, a Civil Defense session in Austin, and an updated Employes Manual for city staff.

Vince Taylor To Be Guest Speaker At Terry County Banquet

Vince Taylor, assistant attorney general and former Texas Legion official, will speak at a Howard Henson Post 269 American Legion banquet at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the Legion Hall. The event honors the Outstanding Officer of Terry County and the Pippin brothers aboard the Coral Sea. Tickets are $1, with proceeds for Legion activities.

County Singing Scheduled Today at Nazarene Church

Terry County hosts a county singing convention at the Nazarene Church on Second and Tate Streets at 2 30 p m. Special groups will perform solos duets trios and quartets under the direction of C D Hester president Clayton Littlefield vice president and Mrs M A Gorman secretary.

Ricky Timmons Captures Grand Prize at Lions Talent Show

Ricky Timmons, 13, son of Billy and Mrs. Timmons, won the grand prize at the 16th Lions Club Tournament of Talent held Friday night in Brownfield. He sang Sixteen Tons to top a field of 15 junior high entries and earned a paid four person trip to Six Flags. Robin Lindsey and The Calamity Crowd also placed in the competition with high school and elementary divisions. The event featured vocal soloists, guitar ensembles, a cake auction, and special music by Clyde Green Trio.

Three File For Brownfield City Council Seats

Three candidates filed for Brownfield City Council spots: Sama, Jones, and Hahn along with Flache. The election was set for April 4, with filing due 30 days prior. Jones is a Brownfield native who runs the town theatres since 1950 and graduated Texas Tech in 1949. Hahn, a Lamesa native now farming and ranching, moved to Brownfield in 1951 and served in the Navy. Flache, a Brownfield native and Texas A&M graduate, has farmed since 1949 and worked for the Soil Conservation Service.
