ASC Chairman Carl Golden announces a Feb 25 deadline for new grower cotton allotments for farms with no cotton planted in 1942 53 or 34. Eligibility requires sole county ownership or operation and absence of prior allotment. Premeasurement services available for 56 a farm plus 2 per extra plot, with optional official measurement before planting.

Lions Talent Tournament tryouts open with two nights of shows

The third annual Lions Talent Tournament begins with tonight’s 7 50 curtain. Elementary and colored divisions perform first followed by Friday’s grand prize round. About 25 acts per night, with Sonny Curtis and others on the program. proceeds aid the Lions Light preservation program.

Feeder Show Slated Saturday Across Terry County

About 43 Terry County 4 H and PFA boys will show calves Saturday morning at a Jaycee sponsored feeder show. Dawson county agent will judge the stock on a feeder basis in three groups. Six showmanship awards will be given and calves weighed at Good Pasture Grain with prizes for best gains before the April show. The event aims to train boys early for the Terry County Junior Livestock Show April 21 22. Ten calves expected from Wellinan PFA six from Meadow twenty three from Brownfield and four from 4 H members.

Boys Pass 99 In Hot Checks Caught In Public

Two boys ages FH and 2 were placed on probation in parental custody after admitting forging and passing seven to eight checks worth 5 to 15 dollars. Judge Chesshir criticized merchants for cashing many checks and urged community responsibility for reform. Police questioned the youths after a merchant refused a 20 dollar check, and the boys agreed to repay the checks.

County and BIE Group to Consider Expansion Plan

The County and Brownfield area committee meet with City officials to discuss a park expansion project. Engineers estimate a 116000 to 130000 cost for steel seawater pool tennis courts and shade structures, with land, playground equipment, and shelters not included. A bond issue is proposed with no tax rate increase. An airport issue will also be reviewed for the afternoon session.

Hutson Elected Chamber President as Gum Gibbins Plans Move

B F Hutson was elected president of the Browntight Chamber of Commerce. J B Gum Gibbins Inc will open a yard here by March 1. Leon Long expects three more units to Brownfield and Pioneer Natural Gas starts a compression station eight miles south. J Jardah of Amari will supervise the station.

World Day of Prayer to be observed in Brownfield

World Day of Prayer will be observed Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Brownfield from 10 to 11 am under the Women’s Federated Society and the National Council of Churches. Businesses are asked to close during the hour as has been policy for the last two years.

Terry County envisioned as cattle feeding hub by Texas Tech dean

Dean W L Stangel urged Brownfield Rotary to consider Terry County on the South Plains as ideal for livestock feeding. He noted 16 counties share similar traits, with agriculture and oil as main incomes, and proposed a cattle feeding program to increase farm income and soil fertility. He cited 1,150 farms averaging 425 acres and outlined feed requirements to fatten 23,000 head of cattle, projecting four tons of manure per animal during feeding.

Five New Wildcats Staked In County

Five new wildcat locations were announced in Terry county during the past week with another test location added. The five extend from the southeast to the northwest, bringing total staked sites to ten for the year, a likely county record. Major operators include The Texas Company, Placid Oil, Texaco, Cities Service, Honohia Oil, and Ohio Oil. Exploration targets include Fusselman and Wolfcamp formations with depths from 9 000 to 14 000 feet, near Core Devonian and Corrigan pools.
