City Manager Jake Geron will present the proposed 1977 budget to the Brownfield City Council. The plan includes salary raises for city employees varying five to twelve percent, with the largest increase for Police Department patrolmen from 735 to 820 dollars per month. Citizens may voice opinions at the next meeting.
Chyra Carlisle was named overall winner of the Lions Club Tournament of Talent at Brownfield Middle School, earning a $50 prize from Brownfield State Bank and the Junior High division trophy and $30 gift certificate. Winners in elementary and high school divisions, special entertainment, and a charity cake sale were also noted with sponsor gifts and a $200 cake donated to Girls Town.
Robert A. Edwards of First Federal Savings & Loan announces Eddie Johnson will manage the new Brownfield branch at 201 W. Hill Street within two months. Johnson, a 1966 Levelland High School graduate with a Texas State University BA, previously served as vice president at Brownfield State Banks and Trust.
Brownfield shows an 11 percent gain in city sales tax receipts for 1976 with $225,615.68 collected, up from $203,542.44 in 1975. Texas cities overall saw rebates totaling $302.9 million in 1976, a 14 percent rise from 1975, led by Houston at $62.6 million and Dallas at $35.3 million.
Terry County commissioners met Monday approving a radar unit for the highway patrol from M.P.H. Industries at 1485 plus trade in. They appointed Wayne Dubose to the Salary Grievance Committee and Virgil Crawford as assistant county attorney. Bids for a motor grader ripper and a precincts 1 and 3 crusher compactor were opened. West Texas Equipment Co. bid the compactor 7433 with trade, ripper 8283. The court donated 500 to Terry County Museum and Meadow Museum.
The Terry County Heart Association will host Heart Sunday on February 20 with Mayor Lytle as chairman. Members will collect donations door to door, with the association receiving a 3.20 value in services per dollar donated. The funds support local programs and Houston area research. Joel Franks states CPR teaching is the main goal for preventive heart care in the 64 county region, and the association has aided Brownfield Hospital’s heart recovery program and CPR education in schools and clubs.
Six individuals were placed in the Terry County Jail between February 8 and February 15. Charges ranged from DWI to possession of marijuana.
Duane Moss, a local soil conservationist, named president of the Lubbock Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He will lead 2,800 members across six wards and eight branches in the Texas Panhandle, visiting each ward yearly and meeting quarterly with stake representatives.
