Five candidates filed for three city council seats Friday afternoon with no filing fee and a March 1 deadline in the city secretary office at city hall. Jackie Cargill James Strickland Coleman Williams Lanny Webb and Graham Swain seek the at large posts, terms of three retiring members expiring for Bill Marchbanks Odell Sears and Jim Reed. A councilman may serve only two consecutive two year terms, so none of the three retiring officials are eligible.
Terry County Program Building Committee will meet at 9 30 a m Friday February 14 in the directors room of Terry County Farm Bureau 201 E Hill. Officers will be elected to lead the committee and attendance is urged. Catechism-like call to involve local groups appears in quotes from James Foy and Mrs Jane Blay.
In regular session Monday Commissioner Gerald Bevers acted as judge in Judge Chesshir’s absence. Mrs. Truett Flache gave $100 from the Genealogical Society Committee, repaying last year’s $300 grant for cemetery books. Dues to the South Plains Association of Governments and the county share of school taxes to the H W Nelson Estate were paid. Kenneth Moore reported on a recent commissioners and judges meeting at College Station.
Brownfield parishioners from St Anthony’s and St Paul’s Mission Church Seagraves will embark on a three day pilgrimage to Christ the King Church in Lubbock the first weekend of Lent February 14 to 16. About 25 from Seagraves, 220 from St Anthony’s, plus volunteers from Meadow and Wolforth will travel by foot and expect to reach Lubbock around 3 p.m. Sunday. The Holy Year Jubilee is observed every 25 years, tracing its roots to pre Exilic Judaism and its adoption by the Catholic Church since 1300 A.D.
Pappy John Seymour Powell a Brownfield artist who carved from scrap wood in a back workshop. He worked for the Texas and Pacific Railroad and directed Brownfield’s first band while serving as bank director and church steward. His works included matchstick ballet figures and taxidermy pieces later cherished by his daughter Mrs. Rufus Rush.
Trial of Frank Guy Camp and James Lawson Awbrey over disorderly conduct ends in a hung jury with four men and two women unable to reach a verdict. Judge L A Rhyne will re try the case at a later date. Police report a house fire burglary on 211 E Buckley with items stolen.
American Legion Post 269 at Brownfield will host Girlstown, USA staff and girls on Friday February 14. Girls will enjoy a shopping spree at Masso's Department Store for needed clothing followed by a 7:30 p.m. Valentine dinner at the Legion home prepared by the Legion kitchen with the Ladies Auxiliary in charge.
In a Holy Year decreed by Pope Paul VI the St. Anthony's parish plans a penitential pilgrimage. Rev. Adrian Maguire leads a 60 mile route from Seagraves with participants walking in sackcloth and carrying a ten foot cross. Volunteers provide crosses garments food and services.
Eyvonne Crenshaw, a Brownfield newcomer, becomes TG&Y manager. A Clovis native, she previously worked at Wolflin Village Store in Amarillo and joined TG&Y one month after turning sixteen. She is a Clovis High graduate of 1970 and has advanced through TG&Y while studying at Draughon’s Business College.
