A Brownfield year in review highlights migration, rising building permits, water and power meter changes, and ongoing recovery from recession. Local residents debate urban decline while praising rainfall, new businesses, and community efforts including a new Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at 915 South 7th Street.
The Terry County Rodeo sponsored by the sheriff’s posse is tentatively scheduled for June 8 10 with Dave Crate Snider noting a 6 am breakfast. Elk City producer Plusnamer is considered for the event. Plummer and Butler Brothers are linked to stock. The posse’s new arena is finished and touted as the best in West Texas.
Lions Club reports strong ticket sales for the annual Talent Show at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Contestants hail from Brownfield and nearby towns with entry blanks accepted through Tuesday. The program included a film on Seidgefield Story and training methods for bird hunting dogs.
Local law officers reported a busy week with burglaries and car thefts. Investigations include a break in at Plaza Restaurant and a vandalized hasp on a Copeland Price warehouse. Manuel Perez was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a shooting near Av Sur Fabila. Multiple traffic accidents and various arrests for vagrancy, forgery, and other charges are noted, with several suspects released on bond or costs. A Volkswagen owned by Interstate Publishers Service disappeared after an overnight motel stay. A 1965 Cadillac and other vehicles were involved in service-station and parking lot accidents. A six year old rider was treated for non-serious injuries after a pedestrian collision.
The Brownfield High School Livestock Judging Team, part of the Future Farmers of America, won first place at the International Southwestern Livestock Show in El Paso against 41 teams. Sneed led in swine, and Farrar ranked high overall. Friona FFA placed second.
County Judge Bill McKinney City Manager Jake Geroa and Raymond Beck attended the one day Task Force meeting in Junction Wednesday. Speakers included C L Cooke Fort Worth and Mrs J J Kirchoff Plainview who urged womens roles in town development and local tourism efforts.
The Terry County Unit of the American Cancer Society appeals to women for help in making bandages from old sheets. Meetings are held Mondays at 1:30 PM at the South Plains Health Unit corner Main and D Streets. Donate sheets if unable to attend.
City Water Department figures show January usage at 29.594 million gallons, up from 28.435 million in January 1966. High day was January 5 with 1.148 million gallons, low day January 28 with 817 thousand. January 29, 1966 saw 747 thousand gallons.
Brownfield Jaycees join Texans for Traffic Safety and Governor Connally's highway safety plan. Lt. Beauchamp Sgt. Roberts and Greenfield will present safety programs Feb. 19 at civic clubs and Brownfield High. The statewide effort aims to reduce fatalities injuries and costs from traffic crashes. Local residents urged to join the program.
