Alvin M. Muldrow received Brownfield’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce banquet held in the Junior High cafeteria. Rex Jennings of Wichita Falls urged progress and strong Chamber support, with Dr. Claude H. Caperton Jr as MC and Joe Price honored for past accomplishments. Harry Elam, new president, presented a plaque to Price as directors were recognized.

Thefts Under Investigation In Brownfield Area
The Terry County sheriff reports two burglaries in the vicinity. J G Beavers lost 16 hens seven miles southeast of Wellman. Frank Szydloski farm north of Windham Gun missing tractor draw bars tires and a butane hose. Other items include a stolen pickup tire and a theft of roller bits later recovered. Police records note multiple minor arrests and two noninjury accidents. A Brownfield General Hospital tire theft was recovered, and a North 6th Street raid yielded six suspects.

Escape Hatch Break Lands Five Jailbreakers in West Texas
A quintet of Latin Americans escaped Terry County Jail Saturday night and fled about 44 miles west of Brownfield near the New Mexico line after a rapid manhunt. They used improvised tools to breach a ceiling barrier, freed by lifting a welded fixture, then emerged into the offices and released the others. Names include Valentin Villalobos, Damacio Gonzales, Jessie Gutierrez, Lorenzo Montoya, and Rudy Hernandez, with Montoya facing multiple escape charges and other bonds set at 3,500 dollars each for gun theft and vehicle theft. A sixth man, Ignacio, charged with aiding the escape, is held on a 5,000-dollar bond. Montoya is the only one charged with jail escape due to an exception. See FREEDOM. Page 6.
