The Terry Memorial Hospital District votes to hold an April 3 directors election with four seats. Filing ends March 9 at 5 PM, petitions by 10 qualified voters required. One ballot box to be placed in the County Clerk’s office. Occupancy at the new hospital may be four months away.
Paul Risser brings home Rafico a nine year old Ecuadoran boy with a missing left leg. Rafico, known for resilience, grew up in an Ecuadoran orphanage run by Hank Davis in Quito before joining Risser on a trip to the United States to be fitted for a prosthetic leg. He will receive care at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital for about two weeks, then return to a large loving family.
Meadow Independent School District trustees met in a breakfast session February 8 and called an election for two trustees to be held April 3. Incumbents Olane Caswell and Mark Williams seek re election. filing closes March 3. Winfred Tucker presided at the meeting.
The Jaycees annual Awards Banquet will name the Outstanding Boss and Jaycee of the Year and announce the Outstanding Young Man of the Year. The event starts at 7 30 pm Friday at the Country Club with Lane Stephens of Lubbock as guest speaker from the Zaneres Bureau of Investigation.
Terry County students will mail 27 cents to the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research by using posters and envelopes in schools. The drive, led by local organizers, aims for a $5,000 county quota and runs through the spring with C Day on April 27. Dr. Cecil Knox notes every cent is well spent in the fight against cancer.
Presbyterians from First United, Grace, and Westminister churches in Lubbock will host a weekend lay gathering led by Rev. Charles Olsen of Atlanta with Rev. Dick Schmidt and Rev. Forrest Whitworth assisting. Sessions cover personal relationship to Christ church community and world with a 1 30 p m start Saturday and Agape Dinner at 6 p m. Sunday School and worship conclude with a wrapup at 7 30 p m.
The Noon Lions Club hosts the 19th Tournament of Talent February 18 19 at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Elementary junior high and senior high contestants compete for prizes with a final on Feb 19. Master of ceremonies includes E F Crow Howard McIlroy and Bob Lego. Entries due Feb 16 auditions Feb 16 7 30 pm each act three minutes. Tickets 50 cents students 1 adult. Proceeds fund Lions Camp Kerrville eye glasses and local projects.
Interview with J A Bass 92 year old Brownfield Nursing Home resident born in Talapoosie County Alabama. He and his family moved to Texas in 1908 by train with all household goods stock and kin. He survived a long life with deep roots in Chambers and Lafaye communities and early work on river dam projects.
