Glen Barbee led table topics as Brownfield Toastmasters met in the Chamber of Commerce building. Six speakers argued for and against US troops in Vietnam while others tackled words like ambassador and liberty. Best table topic honors were shared by Bill Cowan and Duane Moss.
Terry County ASC announces advance payments of 50 percent of the feedgrain diversion payment and 50 percent of the estimated wheat diversion payment for farmers who request them. Cotton program advances are limited to small farm program qualifiers. Eligible producers must have cropland in the prior year and current cropland status suitable for crop production. payments to those already signed up expected in about two weeks.
Terry County Grand Jury convened Monday with 29 cases on the docket. Twenty were indicted and four were no billed. Indictments include burglary by breaking and forgery and passing among others.
Dr C J Kay of Lubbock Christian College will be guest speaker Thursday night when the Brownfield Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol receives its charter at 7 30 p m in the Party House. Public invited to hear Dr Kay and the ceremony features colors by J C Harris and musical selections by Brownfield High School Choir. Mayor Jack Hamilton and Terry County officials will greet visitors.
Funeral services for 82 year old James H. Martin were held at Memorial Chapel of Brownfield Funeral Home with Rev. Alby J. Cockrell officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Martin, a Brownfield resident since 1922, died after a lengthy illness. Survivors include his wife Pearl, son James, three daughters, two brothers, one sister, fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Bruce Zorns announces Jim Pete Hale will join Brownfield State Bank as vice president and assistant trust officer on March 1. Hale, a 1966 UT law graduate, has been in private practice and served as Assistant County Attorney since 1967. He will join the trust committee.
Brownfield City Council authorized Parkhill Smith and Cooper of Lubbock to prepare plans for a paving project totaling over 150000. The Old Lamesa Road will be included. Estimates assume 40 foot streets at 4.54 per unit and 36 100t streets at 4.04 with 30 percent city participation. A report on ambulance service was made by City Manager Jake Geron. The committee includes three members from the City Council, three from the Terry Memorial Hospital District Board, and three from the County Commissioners Court.
The monthly immunization clinic will be held at the South Plains Health Department on Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. The clinic offers vaccines for smallpox polio measles diphtheria whooping cough and tetanus. Families unable to visit a private doctor are urged to attend to complete the series for children not yet started or who attended last month’s clinic.
Dr. Robert Metzer Dr. Robert Berry and Lyndon Almond of the Texas Extension Service spoke at a county cotton meeting at the Party House Thursday night. Twenty four farmers attended as Vernon Farrar chaired. The speakers covered reducing production costs improving varieties disease pressures and insect issues impacting Terry County cotton growers.
Lions Club members received tickets for the 17th annual Tournament of Talent at a noon session. Tickets cost 1 for adults and 50 cents for students and go on sale immediately. The event is set for 7 30 p m in Brownfield High School Auditorium.
