Terry County Farm Bureau launched its membership drive with a 6:30 a.m. breakfast in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas. J. W. Hawkins presided as Walt Myers of Waco discussed the bureau’s growth, noting 208 Texas bureaus and global reach. A film on the Europe Trade Building Tour was shown. Prizes of 50 and 30 gift certificates reward the top new member and top renewals. The local group has 1292 members with a goal of 1325, and about 40 members attended.
Texas Austin state representative Jesse T. George of Terry County says he will oppose pari mutuel wagering regulation licensing and taxation in the 60th Session and also vote against liquor by the drink. He cites 1962 referendum results showing district opposition and notes heavy mail opposing both measures. He pledges to reflect majority views as in the 59th Session.
Brownfield Independent School District trustees meet in called session at Fox's Restaurant to approve a two year tax collection contract with Jack McCreary of Austin. The term runs Feb 15 1967 to Feb 14 1969 for delinquent personal and real property taxes. Board members and key staff attended.
Lanny Webb was elected president of the Brownfield Jaycees at the regular luncheon meeting Monday. Other new officers include D. Hearn first vice president Ray Anderson second vice president Marlow Summit secretary Jim Hensley treasurer and Jack Greenfield director. Installation will be at the noon March 6 meeting with Captain Henry C Hill state director for Area 2C conducting the ceremony.
Three Terry County youths John M. Pippin Sidney T. Pippin and Michael D. Pippin will be honored at a February 21 American Legion banquet as outstanding Terry County officers. The brothers serve on USS Coral Sea with shared family presence while at sea in Vietnam operations. They are expected to land San Francisco later this month and miss the recognition event.
The Gaines County District Court voided the Water Conservation District No. 4 instrument filed Aug 16 1966 and cancelled the April 26 1966 election results across Terry Lynn Gonzales Dan gon Andrews Gaines Yoakum and Cochran counties with costs against the district. Terry County voters approved the formation by 185 to 73 in city and 104 to 25 in rural areas.
In the April 16 election the tax passed 164 to 81 in city areas and 77 to 3 in rural zones. Voters in Terry Cochran and Yoakum except Denver City approved the district while Dawson Andrews and Gaines counties defeated it. Lamesa rejected the issue by 131 to 132. The court ordered the district kept until debts are paid, with expenses shared pro rata by the county commissioners of each involved county as per the Texas Water Rights Commission order of Feb 2. Defendants filed notice of appeal.
About 5,100 Terry County residents will be eligible to vote this year, per J D Akers. Elections set April 1 include school trustees across four districts and seven Terry Memorial Hospital Board directors. Brownfield city council races April 4. Meadow and Union districts also hold trustee elections. Mayor role in Meadow under discussion with possible new mayor. Incumbents up for re election across boards and city councils.
