Rail spur debate in Lubbock area over Park Way project

Citizens from Brownfield Seagraves Levelland and Whiteface attended a Lubbock Chamber of Commerce meeting to discuss Park Way plans and potential rail spur closures. Speakers included Mel Pope Texas Highway Department Dr John Drummond TTU Dean and Senator John Montford who urged cooperation and a curb on rail right of way while preserving freight service and economic links. A special committee with city leaders was proposed to balance rail access and Park Way development with a first meeting set for next Friday in Lubbock.

Terry County Junior Livestock Show and Sale Dates Set

About 180 Terry County youths prepare for the Terry County Junior Livestock Show and Sale and community shows slated for February 16 to 18. Weigh in runs February 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Bob Dumas weighing all animals. Hog show begins 5 p.m. February 17, lamb show at 7:30 p.m. February 18, followed by steer and heifer shows.

Construction slows to crawl in January in Brownfield

Nine building permits totaling 12635 were issued in Brownfield in January, down from 25060 in December and far below January 1988s 121000. Permits include roof remodeling for Jerrell Hadaway, fences for Lloyd Burns and Hal Tunnell, a mobile home for Eldon Allison, storage buildings for Billy Jones and Ricky Burris, a carport for Santos Morales, a remodel of a garage for Shirley Hales, and a storage project for Terry County Young Farmers. A Feb 18 barbecue lunch and premium sale are planned with auctioneering by Steve Osborn. A Pee Wee Hog Show for under eight takes place Feb 18, sponsored by Terry County Young Farmers. Show superintendents and judges are listed, with three local shows planned before the county event at the Brownfield showbarn on Feb 9, 11, and Wellman dates.

Wellman district annual report highlights TEA data

Wellman Independent School District reports total enrollment of 178 with 45 in grades 9-12, 28 in grades 7-8, 89 in grades 1-6, and 16 in kindergarten. Ethnic balance favors white students at 73.2 percent and Hispanics at 26.3 percent. TEAMS scores show high levels of mastery across grades, with juniors excelling in Language Arts and Mathematics and varying results in Writing and Reading.

Brownfield Cubs begin era with Schubert as baseball boss

Brownfield High School introduces Les Schubert as head baseball coach succeeding Armando Sedeno who left for Spring Westfield. Schubert inherits a program with four straight district titles and a 18-7-1 finish, led by seven returning starters and 10 lettermen. Seniors Joe Luis Garcia Bobby Little and Tino Cortes signed with College of the Southwest, while Schubert recalls his ascent from JV coach to varsity leader.

Terry County theft report notes three incidents and two probation revocations

Terry County Sheriff's Office reports three thefts and two probation revocations. Rings valued at 8440 were taken from a Route 1 residence on January 26. Irrigation pipe worth 576 was stolen from a farm near US 380 between January 15 and 21. A calf valued at 150 disappeared from a nearby pasture. John Lane, 35, and Julio Curiel, 22, were jailed on felony and probation revocations with no bond.
