Don Parks was reap pointed as election judge with Dennis McCutcheon as alternate Zelma Miller absentee clerk and Wanda Blevins and Mary Jo Collins as deputy clerks. Filing runs February 7 to March 7. Council tabled gas contract talks with Energas and Westar amid Pioneer split. Work on the sewage plant may cause odors during replacement of gas lines.
City Weather Observer Earl Elrod reports January featured a warm spell that favored spring over winter with 20 days of highs above 50 degrees. The month saw a high of 72 on January 30 and a low max of 21 on January 19, while the cold spell around January 18–21 brought ice and light snow. Total moisture was 0.10 inch, far below last year's 2.37 inches, as 18 inches of snow last year contrasted with this month’s milder pattern. Evening temps ranged from 9 to 37 degrees, and normal January moisture is 0.59 inch per the Texas Almanac.
Youngsters prepare animals for a string of stock shows in Terry County starting Saturday with Brownfield and Meadow events. The Brownfield show weighs at 8am with judging at 1pm, featuring 80 swine and 15 lambs judged by Ron Mayfield. Meadow and other area shows run Feb 13–18 with multiple judges, prizes, and 4-H and FFA participation across livestock categories.
January permits total 152 425 dollars, nearly double last year. Major share stems from ongoing office and retail construction in the 1300 block of Tahoka Road.
