Citizens are invited to attend the Officer Appreciation Banquet sponsored by Howard Henson Post No 269 American Legion at 7 30 p m on Feb 12 in the Legion Hall. The event will feature the naming of the Outstanding Officer for 1969.
The Terry County Executive Committee schedules a 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 6 meeting in the Directors Room of the Farm Bureau Building 201 East Hill. County chair James Evans invites all interested Republicans to attend as the main topic is the coming election.
Brownfield Country Club held its annual stockholders meeting Monday night and elected new officers for the coming year. T. Williams Jr. named president with W. A. Fulford as vice president. Thelma Crites remains secretary. The women's organization chose Punch Nelson as president with Morris Knox as vice president and Leigen as secretary. Carl Hogue treasurer and other posts filled.
Terry County Grand Jury convened on Wednesday February 4 with a docket of twenty cases. Counts include burglary by breaking for Keyes Alcorta, worthless check for John Reed Sr and R. G. Bell, enticing a minor for Pete Martinez Jr, forgery and passing for Tommy Lee Flournoy, destroying public property for Arthur Ramos, assault to murder with malice for John Person and Catarina, two counts of theft over 50 dollars for several defendants, and driving while intoxicated second offense for Jerry Gomez.
Texas Highway Patrol investigated a two car collision nine miles north of Brownfield on Level land highway around 4 30 p m Monday. A 1969 Mercury driven by Mrs Billy Hunt Howard and a 1969 Ford pickup driven by Allen Henry Gray collided after Howard attempted to pass a truck. Both drivers were treated for injuries at local facilities and released. Several arrests were reported including Victor Perez Manuel R Perez Ignacio Morales Joaquin R Martinez Orville Riggins Jose Molina Hernandez and Manuel Hernandez with charges ranging from capias pro fine to theft over 50 and driving while license suspended.
GenTel announces further rate cuts for long distance calling effective February 1. Traffic director L L Porter says self dialed station to station calls now cost less than operator assisted routes, reflecting higher operator costs and lower self dial costs.
Groundhog Day passes without shadow sensing, hinting a mild season ahead. Plans unfold for the Fourth Annual Police Officers Appreciation Banquet by the American Legion set for February 12 at 7 30 p m in the Legion Hall. Also noted are local spots and residents including Hot Dog Boston and Ken Bailey returning to Brownfield with his family after 1968 work and prior Brownfield drive-in theater days.
Mrs. Ava McKinney was chosen Neighborhood Center director by the Community Action Agency board early Monday in the Chamber of Commerce building. Rosalita D. Cassoncia was named as aide to work with McKinney, with Bruce Zorns presiding.
About 58 000 eligible voters registered for the 1970 elections per J D Wot Akers Terry County tax assessor-collector. Local voters will choose county and city officials school board trustees and hospital district directors with primary dates in May and June and general election on November 3.
Brownfield officials discuss the Region One Texas Conservation Awards banquet set for May 7 with guests from West Texas and the Panhandle. Other items include high school progress, funding worries after Nixon veto, and upcoming events in Brownfield such as a free band and choir concert.
Postmaster Howard Davis reports Brownfield's 1969 postal receipts at 183 683 dollars, slightly down from 188 793 in 1968. Since 1944, when the post office first class status began, annual receipts rose overall with temporary yearly fluctuations and growth continuing through the year. The town expects service improvements as all city delivery routes go motorized with scout type vehicles, easing foot carrier work.
William M. Pope of 1211 East Buckley is appointed supervising resident engineer for the Texas Highway Department in Brownfield. He succeeds Carl R. Hart who retires March 31 after 38 years with the department in roles from instrumentman to district maintenance engineer. Pope, born in 1955 in Brownfield, previously served as senior resident engineer and engineering assistant.
