Brownfield students report on city police plan as courtesy tickets end and failure to appear fines begin. Grosser notes cover a fire at Ruben Simms house and Loudermilk Cleaners, ROTC ribbon awards for Deah Murphy, and local business briefs.
Terry county reports 3015 eligible voters after final rush to meet the poll tax deadline. Statewide trend shows lower totals than 1952. License plates went on sale with slow sales. 65 passenger tags and under 30 commercial by Thursday noon. E. C. Pool of Brownfield among 854 ham operators with mobile gear paid extra for special plates.
The PTA reports a completed Procedure course and an upcoming upholstery class led by Wanda Terry Franks. The upholstery course runs Monday Wednesday Friday 7 50 to 9 30 p m at 208 S 5th, three weeks, 32 hours for a certificate, open to members and others for 50 cent dues. Contacts: Mrs E E Preston 2881.
Delegates from Terry county to the District 4 meeting of the Texas State Teachers Association were chosen at the Meadow school winter session. Delegates include J. B. Curtis Brownfield Joe Burleson Meadow Odus Walser Union A J Stevens Wellman and B H Baldwin Well man. Principal speaker Evelyn Jones of Carroll Thompson Junior High Lubbock addressed about 125 teachers.
Texas Farm Bureau officials meet in Atlanta with Georgia and Southern leaders to plan a policy drive. Allan Kline and officers head the American Farm Bureau Federation program addressing five major issues including economic policies trade rural policy budget taxes natural resources and labor rules.
Selective Service Board Local 116 lists eight men moved to 1-A after a regulatory change requiring six months of service. Reclassified are James D. Hill, Elbert H. Hinkle, Floyd T. Conley, J. W. Presley, Fred B. Davis, Wayne B. Strickland, Kenton P. Sullivan, and Roger M. Hagoe. Nine reported for induction on Jan 26 from the area, with several transfers and requests for naval reserve active duty noted. Texas February draft call set at 1,010. January had 1,314 and March 985.
Texas Employment Commission local manager Aubrey Jones said meetings are discontinued until the county receives more moisture after a slim turnout for the Monday Farm Labor day. Turnout for the second meeting numbered about 4 farmers and a dozen farm laborers, far below January’s larger attendance.
Marion Bowers, Joe Christian, J. T. Hoy, B. F. Hutson, C. C. Primm and J. E. Smith were elected to the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Board for a three year term. They replace retiring directors. The banquet on Feb 23 will install new directors and name a president. Dr. Charles Karsakoff will be the keynote speaker with the topic Behind the Iron Curtain.
Last week of January saw one new completion and two new locations, all in the Prentice field, with eight new locations in the northwest Terry county area. Honolulu Oil Corp. reported a well in Section 21 near Tokio with 105 barrels daily and a high gas oil ratio. two new Prentice field locations were Tennessee Production Co. and Honolulu Oil Corp., with details of sections, blocks, and depths. The Honolulu permit to deepen to 6900 feet was amended.
John J. Sloan a veteran revenue agent from Lubbock will be in Brownfield February 25 to help prepare 1953 income tax returns. He will be housed in the courthouse to assist taxpayers.
The Terry Yoakum county March of Dimes surpassed its 1954 goal, reaching $5,100 led by Campaign chair V. R. Moreman. Plains contributed $8750, Denver City $8650, Terry County $33,700, Brownfield donations rose to $1,276.40, Mothers March yielded $738.95. women's committee led by Mrs. Jacek Shirley and Mrs. Jack Bailey organized the drive.
