A humorous column notes Mary T. Brooks on pennies hoarded in piggy banks and seigniorage potential. It mentions a 66-year-old Darwin, Minnesota bachelor who saved twine into a four and a half ton ball, and adds grim traffic injury projections for Texas families in the 1970s.
Congressman George H. Mahon will be luncheon speaker at the ninth annual West Texas Water Conference on Friday at Red Raider Convention Center Lubbock. He will discuss water appropriation proposals before Congress and has chaired the House Appropriations Committee since 1964. Four new members of the West Texas Water Institute will be introduced Bill Clayton George McBee Bill Waddle and C Palmer Norton. The institute’s annual meeting occurs today with 30 sponsoring organizations. Speakers include Peter Reynolds and Fred Bayley Jr.
General Telephone Company announces three seniors Angela Adams Dana Brookshire and Carl Marsh as winners of the Student Information Program essay contest in Brownfield High School Western Area. Winners receive 100 scholarships and plan college majors in psychology elementary education and data processing.
Terry County chamber directors discuss a Brownfield civic center with 80 percent federal funding and plan a study committee. New and retiring Red Coats named. Kizer comprehensive city plan eyed for 25 year growth with parks malls and modernization. Dennis Lilly notes West Texas Water meeting. Mahon speaks at Feb 5 banquet. local insurer Noble cites high auto costs and storm losses.
A 2 p.m. meeting at the Party House will discuss disease problems in cotton and grain sorghum, insects and insecticides, and a fertility program to reach Terry County’s 3.76 in 76 goal. Dr. Bob Kerry Dr. Don Rummel and Jim Valentine will speak. All farmers urged to attend.
Bruce Zorns resigned as president of the Terry County Community Action Agency, accepted at a board meeting. County Judge W. T. McKinney proposed L. J. Richardson fill the remaining two years and be elected president. Other officers were rejected and several directors re-elected to three-year terms. Committees were formed to oversee day care, building plans, and multi county board representation. The Neighborhood Center and Well Baby Clinic reported progress and new programs, including adult education and family planning, with emergency aid provisions outlined.
The Terry-Yoakum County chapter notes the MOD campaign has raised 910.79 to date. Brownfield Jaycees collected 216.67 in two roadblocks on Broad way and Hill Streets, while 694.12 came from the Mothers March led by the Terry County Young Homemakers. Funds remain via coin banks and mail contributions. Ray White chairs the effort with Viola Simmonds as treasurer and Shirley Parker as secretary.
Howard Henson Post No. 269 plans its annual Oratorical Contest at 1 p.m. Saturday in the American Legion Hall on South Eighth Street. Only one entry received so far from Brownfield High School representative Doris Pickett, with entries open until 1 p.m. Saturday. The district winner receives a $225 scholarship and advances to the 4th Division Contest in Amarillo on February 26, with the state winner to follow in San Antonio March 12 and a national total of $43,500 in scholarships. Public encouraged to attend at no charge.
January 1971 in Terry County had only a trace of moisture for the third straight year. Two brief snow flurries occurred on January 4 and 7, with high and low temperatures ranging from 81 to minus two degrees. Forecasters expect February to be warmer than normal with below normal precipitation as dry air continues to dominate the South Plains.
Terry County ASCS chairman W A Fulford announces Texas committeemen and county executives will attend a Galveston conference February 9 to 10. Featured speakers include E F Behrens and George Behrens plus Ray Wax. Topics cover farm programs environmental issues and Rural Environmental Assistance Program implications. Also attending are Billy Timmons and John H Stockton Jr. from Terry County.
Meet your Nabor for the week is Mrs Claud L Buchanan 415 W Powell a lifelong Terry County resident. She spent early years twelve miles east of Brownfield before moving to town in 1924 attended Pleasant Valley school then Brownfield High School for her junior and senior years. Daughter of the late Jay Barret and Viola Mae.
