Cotton Classing Office Closes. Brownfield Yearly Report
The USDA Cotton Classing Office at Brownfield closed for the season on Monday January 31. About 300000 samples were classed for the Brownfield area, up from 173000 last year. Average grade was Strict Low Middling Light Spotted and staple length rose from 30.6 to 32.4 thirty seconds of an inch. Micronaire rose to 3.6 from 3.1. bark reduced samples rose to 39 percent of total versus 15 percent in 1975. Breaking strength stayed near 84 000 psi this year vs 85 000 last year. Prices rose 15 to 25 cents per pound above 1975 levels. Elections for new board members in three target areas were discussed, along with a potential nonprofit legal aid service for low to moderate income families, requiring a charter and local attorneys Bill McGowan II and Dwayne Pruitt to organize the effort.

A talent screening occurs at 6 30 p m Thursday Feb 3 in the Middle School Auditorium for the Brownfield Neo Lions Club Annual Tournament Talent. Entries closed Feb 2. Shows run 7 30 p m Feb 1 and 11 with tickets 1 for students 1 50 for adults. Proceeds fund Lions service projects. This is the 25th annual show open to grade school junior high and high school entrants including out of school entrants. No professionals may compete. Prizes awarded per division and an overall winner. Bake sale and cake auction to follow.
