Area residents woke to a Groundhog Day forecast predicting six more weeks of cold weather. Officials expect temperatures 8-12 degrees below normal over the next five days with highs near 59 and lows around 30 to 36. A Thursday light rain shower is possible as a warming trend begins.
Grand jury scheduled Thursday will hear fourteen charges including murder and worthless check. Defendants named include Eary Douglas Minor for murder Renna Johnson for worthless check Jimy Garcia Reyna for false and passing Leland Gale for worthless check Jasper Leonard Wise burglary Jerry Ray Mead burglary Steve Rinehart burglary Arnulf Rodriguez assault with intent to murder Sam Valencia assault with intent to murder Cesareo Bernal assault with intent to murder Morris Cardenas assault with intent to murder Johnny Martinez assault with intent to murder Connie Lopez assault with intent to murder Oscar Ingramarson.
Terry County Farm Bureau members met at Heliday East in Lubbock for a countywide rally. Texas Farm Bureau officials C H DeVaney and Wayne Little spoke as Governor Connally proclaimed Farm Bureau Membership Week February 7 12. Terry County plans Feb 7 11 drive to boost 1966 membership from 1235 toward 1400.
Raymond Beck Jr Brownfield Brownfield Chamber manager presented the 1966 program of work and a minimum budget of 18240. Ten points emphasize Industrial and Tourism conventions. committees will announce at March meeting. W W Swaringen leads Tourism. other groups focus on labor surveys, town promotion, civic projects, education and recreation, and legislative liaison.
City Hall officials report Brownfield residents used 28,435,400 gallons of water in January. The high day was January 25 with 1,186,000 gallons and the lowest day January 29 with 747,000 gallons. January 1966 shows a loss of 2,114,000 gallons from the prior month. Meters installed peaked at 3,594, up from 3,558 in January 1965 and 3,481 in January 1964.
Terry County residents stand to save about $64,000 this year if Congress rescinds recent excise tax cuts on telephone service and autos. If not rescinded, local savings approach $156,000, helping offset rising Social Security taxes. Nationally the cut totals $1.7 billion with further adjustments over three years. In Terry County, average family saving could reach about $81 when cuts are fully in effect.
Building permits for January barely topped ten thousand dollars totaling 12 910. Ozark Mahoning Company received the largest permit for a storage building costing 10 060 and was the sole commercial property permit. Other permits covered storage houses car ports garages and additions with holders including Virgil Proffitt Billy Wilson R D Hill W F McCracken and S W Jack Price.
Members of the Brownfield Kiwanis Club viewed a Ford sponsored color film on U S drag racing during a regular meeting at Seleta Jane Brownfield Clubhouse. Cecil Ferguson presided and plans for the March Pan cake Supper were set. Jake Fulford opened with invocation.
Marion Snell presided at a Jaycees luncheon in Brownfield as a report on the junior live stock show set for March 12 to 14 was given by Chris DeBusk the show has raised about 500 toward expenses and is co sponsored by the Jaycees and the Terry County Young Farmers the next meeting on February 7 will be Bosses Day with a program and all Jaycees urged to bring their employers about 18 members attended
Over 300 Lions and their wives attended the Lions International Mid-Winter Conference in Brownfield. The two day event opened with a cabinet meeting led by District Governor Alton Griffin. Sunday featured a welcome by David Nicholson, a song fest, luncheon with music by Leonard Ellington, and performances by Brownfield High School groups. Visiting Lionesses enjoyed an art show at the Presbyterian Church with local artists Jerry Jordan and Mrs. L.G. Smith discussing art forms.
Barbara Baumgardner led vocal selections with Becky Richardson at the piano as Lions Club members enjoyed punch and cooks. Joseph Ganim of Trumbull Connecticut, director of Lions International, gave a 3 pm address on Lion ism. Brownfield Lions presented Ganim a West Texas replica oil well and crops to mark his visit, with a governor’s cabinet gift.
Brownfield City Police logged a quiet weekend with stray dog calls and suspected prowler reports. Two hit and run crashes damaged a 1958 Ford Thunderbird belonging to Travid C. Polk and a 1965 Ford sedan owned by A J Hartman. Wrecks were minimal with two minor injuries from a 1960 Mercedes driven by Joe Leija Jr. and a 1959 Ford driven by Jesus Alaniz. A 1966 Ford and a 1965 Rambler were involved at the light plant. Fredrick J. Schubert and Hurtz Corp ownership noted. James Curtis King charged with DWI. A green tool box was stolen from Gavino Vasquez, belonging to Duke Fulford. Three men were arrested for liquor law curfew violations.
J R Slaughter of St Louis Missouri from the engineering department of Monsanto Chemical Company visited Brownfield Monday to survey a two and a half acre site north of the city. He checked power availability and other factors needed for a plant construction during his brief visit.
