Grand Jury 33 Offenses Up For Review In Terry County

The Terry County Grand Jury will meet Thursday with a docket of 33 offenses. Names include Less Alexander and James Lewis French for forgery, Joe Rivera Deanda Jr. and others for burglary, Jesus Gutierrez and Rudy Hernandez for narcotics and rape charges, Fortino Gonzales for murder, and multiple others charged with burglary theft and assault.

Open meeting on $1,150,000 School and Election issue

The City Council PTA schedules an afternoon open discussion at 3 PM in the junior high cafeteria to explain the school and election measure ahead of the upcoming vote. FHA Backs Family Size Farmer Here

The Farmers Home Administration loaned 863,490 to Terry County farmers in 1965. Funds were used to improve farming operations, enlarge farms, build houses, install water systems, and other development needs. A total of 102 county families used FHA credit that year. Loans target qualified borrowers unable to obtain conventional bank or association credit.

Turner Enters Campaign for Commissioner

K Lanse Turner of Route 2 Brownfield announces Republican bid for Terry County Commissioner Precinct 3. A Brownfield resident since 1937 he is a Texas Tech 1941 engineering graduate and WWII veteran who pursued cotton research and farming. He supports a strong two party system and says he will run for office. Edmiston comments on FHA activity in Terry County noting loan delinquencies and substantial loan turnover during 1963 including $718,860 lent to 63 families for equipment and operating needs plus farm ownership loans and rural housing loans totaling over $722,000.

Weather outlook for Brownfield and Vicini area

Temperatures expected to run about 46 degrees above normal with minor daily changes and little to no precipitation. Normal highs reach 59 degrees and lows average 30 degrees, indicating a mild spell with minimal rain.

Bond Issue Discussion Today In Local Meeting

A 1 150 000 bond vote is set for Saturday February 8 with a public discussion this afternoon at 3 p m in the junior high cafeteria. Superintendent O LR Douglas and School Board reps will outline the bond and answer questions. Passage would finance two school sites, a new junior high facility, and converting the current junior high to an elementary. City Council PTA sponsors the open discussion.

Daniel Services Held Saturday in Plains Baptist Church

Funeral services for J H Daniel known as Pap were held at 2 p m Saturday at Plains Baptist Church with Rev J L Bozeman officiating. Burial followed in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. Daniel, 89, died after a long illness at Brownfield Convalescent Center. He lived in Terry County since 1924, farmed in Meadow area before moving to Plains in 1944. Survivors include his wife three sons Frank and Virgil of Brownfield and Wayne of Salem four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Brownfield News rolls out changes in size date and automation

Brownfield News announces a major makeover including page size increase from 20 to 21 inches, a shift of publishing day from Thursday to Wednesday, and early afternoon presstime for Wednesday delivery. Narcotics Charge Brought Marihuana Confiscated

The second marihuana confiscation in a month occurred in Terry County with the Friday arrest of Valentin A. Villalobos aged 26 at a service station he operates at 7th and Main Streets. Deputy Webster aided. Reyna was questioned but not charged. Villalobos is held on $310,000 bond for possession of marihuana, with about a pound of processed and unprocessed marijuana and a pistol found during the arrest.

Little Moisture Falls In January

The new year brought little rainfall to Brownfield with only .08 inch in January, 59 percent of normal. Most moisture fell on January 29 and 30, while 31 days yielded minimal totals. Lubbock forecast warns to keep winter coats as the Groundhog sees its shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter.

L J Coker announces candidacy for Constable Precinct 1 in Terry County, subject to the Democratic Primary May 2. Farm Labor Day Set for Tuesday in Brownfield

The Texas Employment Commission will host Farm Labor Day in Brownfield on Tuesday February 4 from 9 am to 2 pm in the northeast corner of the courthouse basement. The event connects experienced farm workers with farmers and ranchers seeking labor for the coming crop year. No charge or obligation applies to employers or workers. Spears leads the day office and notes increased demand for tractor operators and general farm hands for personal interviews.

Two Highway Flips Reported By Patrolman

Patrolman Tommy McMeans investigated two crashes on US Highway 62 four miles south of Wellman and four miles south of Brownfield. Keith Coffman Coffman of Lubbock escaped unscathed when his 1964 Dodge and a 1963 Ford toppled after veering into deep sand. both vehicles sustained considerable damage. In the Brownfield incident, Raymond Howard Carter of Odessa was injured when his vehicle wrecked about 10 30 am on Highway 62.
