Talk of Texas by Jack Maguire surveys old holiday customs with a Texas lens. Anthropologist Vaughan M. Bryant traces kissing from ancient nose rubbing to modern lip contact, notes European influence, and credits German immigrants for mistletoe traditions. He highlights New Year legacies like black eyed peas, first footer lore, and the Pea Capital Athens. The column also covers political notes on Kika de la Garza’s retirement plan and Texas Protective Services director search.
