A columnist criticizes Rhino and Black Rhino ammunition claiming they are designed to cause maximal wounds with minimal material and to penetrate body armor. The piece questions their use for home defense and notes ethical concerns and legal issues, suggesting such bullets belong off shelves.
Elva Perez and Anita Vasquez organized the Spirit of Christmas Community Meal at Los Perez Cafe last Saturday, turning a clinic colleagues idea into a city wide effort that served over 350 residents with strong community and charitable support from local agencies churches and businesses.
The Brownfield Goodfellows completed their Christmas relief effort with 188 Brownfield and Terry County families receiving food and toys. About 550 children benefited, aided by volunteers from city, county, police, business, education and community groups. A major $5,000 donation from United Supermarkets, plus other gifts, funded this year’s drive and future investments.
The January reports show Brownfield Regional Medical Center becoming a level four trauma center the first in West Texas. The Brownfield Cubs beat Denver City 72 56 in a district opener. Bonds approved to finance the Jim Rudd Substance Abuse Center. Sheryl Swoopes named AP Female Athlete of the Year for 1993.
Assistant City Manager Tony Phillips reminds residents to use tree collection centers at Lanny & North A St, Jake Geron Park, Buckley & S. 5th St, and Cedar & Hill St. Trees are picked up about three times weekly to reduce fire risk from alley dumping after holidays. The FEBRUARY edition notes the Miss Brownfield Terry County Scholarship pageant winners and stock show champions, plus local basketball results.
Local firms announce closures for the New Year weekend including banks American State Bank and First National Bank, plus insurers and attorneys such as Joe Dan McBeth State Farm and Rudd and Rudd. Several service and commerce groups also observe the holiday among many named entities in Brownfield and Terry counties.
