Plains Cotton Growers says 1973 on the High Plains was a once in a lifetime year due to winter moisture boosting underground soil content for the crop. Favorable planting weather in early May and timely rains led to a strong start, with June and July shaping a remarkable season for cotton across the region.
Cotton harvest near 75 percent complete in Terry County with fair dry weather aiding progress. South Plains reports 80 to 90 percent done as 47 000 bales were classed week ending December 21, total season classing 244 000, far above last year. Quality remains high with Grade 41 most common.
New operators Dale and Lola Ashford from Turkey announce the Silver Star Drive-In opening January 1 at 1211 Lubbock Road. The eatery will serve char broiled steaks burgers and fries with modern facilities, drive‑up service, and in‑house ordering by phone.
A break-in at Domino Hall Saturday resulted in the loss of seven cartons of cigarettes valued at 31.50. Entry was gained by breaking the bathroom window. Police filed three public intoxication charges against Jessie Martinez 40 Elvin B Byram 36 and Antonio Zuniga 21.
Dale and Lola Ashford arrive from O'Donnell and Sweetwater to run the Silver Star Drive In on Lubbock Road. They plan a January 1 cafe opening, operate six days a week, and bring rodeo roots and Church of Christ ties to the Brownfield community. They live at 1211 Lubbock Road with their five year old son Waylon.
