Invitations sent to more than 6000 people for today’s open house and Christmas cantata at First Presbyterian Church. The Messiah selections will be performed at 5 30 PM by the church choir. The sanctuary cost over 160000 to complete.
Brownfield police November report notes rising juvenile vandalism and crime. Chief James Tippit cites about a dozen kids picked up in two weeks. Officers logged 219 calls, 89 arrests, two car thefts, one burglary, one misdemeanor theft, and issued 146 traffic tickets.
A semi trailer carrying 50 bales of cotton owned by Medow Co op gin was destroyed near Ropesville around noon Thursday. Fire departments from Brownfield and Ropesville fought the blaze, but both truck and cotton were a total loss, about five miles from an identified point.
The report lists 81 non hazardous traffic offenses and 28 minor accidents, totaling 123 incidents for 11 months. Other entries include drunkenness 45 driving while intoxicated 4 misdemeanor theft 6 felony theft 1 burglary 3 disturbance and vandalism 20 simple assault 3 hot checks 4 stolen cars 2 and gambling 5.
Assessor-Collector J D Akers reports October brought a quick start with about 74 percent of state and county taxes paid. November payments totaled five percent, with $447,184 paid on a $600,800 bill from an assessed value of $33,601,607. Poll taxes lag behind last year, with only 650 paid so far. December figures were not yet available.
Brownfield Fire Marshal Jim Cousineau warns Christmas decorations pose deadly risks if precautions are ignored. He urges UL approved wiring, water in tree stands, fire resistant materials, flame-free cotton and treated snow, limited lights, and proper disposal of wrapping to protect children and homes.
Brownfield, Andrews and Kermit dominated the District 2 AAA all district football selections made Friday at Andrews. The offense features three Cubs and four from Andrews and Kermit, while five on defense include repeat picks like Browning and Gammill.
Two victims from a Terry crash are improving after being removed from the Lubbock Methodist Hospital critical list. Alene Brown of Pool is in good condition while J. D. Pendergrass of Wellman is listed as fair.
The Brownfield office of the Texas Employment Commission will host Farm Labor Days this year. From 9 to 12 noon each Tuesday in the northeast basement of the courthouse, farmers can find hands for the coming year. Aubrey T. Jones says the meetings offer direct talks between farmer and farmhand to save time and money.
The 15 member Texas Commission on Higher Education will meet in a called session at the State Bar Building in Austin at 9 a.m. Monday. Chairman A. M. Muldrow, of the $21 South Club, presides with an advisory committee of presidents from 18 fully state-supported institutions.
Graveside services were held at 4 pm Saturday in Terry County Memorial Cemetery for Shelby Lee Brock infant son of Mr and Mrs Paul Brock of 303 North B. The Rev A J Franks of North Side Baptist Church conducted the services with Brownfield Funeral Home in charge. Born Thursday in Treadaway Daniell Hospital the baby died at 4 30 am Saturday He is survived by his parents and his grandparents Mr and Mrs Shell Brock 619 East Main and Mr and Mrs Whitey White of Lamesa.
Sheriff James Fulford warns the Goodfellows campaign is nearing deadline as only four needy families have been reported for assistance. He urges rapid submissions to ensure aid before the cutoff.
Brownfield firemen battled a blaze Tuesday that burned six to eight cotton bales and two trailers, briefly held inside the gin before it was extinguished. A roll of bagging was also consumed as part of the incident noted in the area’s recent fires.
Members of the First Baptist Choir perform The Christ Child cantata by C. B. Hawley at 7 30 pm today in the church. The photo lists choir members across three rows with Lovelace as director and Lackey at the piano. Gannaway serves as organist.
The latest bale count shows Terry’s cotton harvest at 50,364 bales by Friday noon, up from 39,176 last week. In Yokum, 12,894 bales were ginned in the same period, a weekly rise of 2,227 bales.
Mrs. W. L. Hughlett, 81, of 111 North First, Brownfield, died Saturday at Treadaway Daniell Hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements were pending at Brownfield Funeral Home. She leaves a husband, six sons including W. E. Hughlett of Superior Ariz and I. O. Hughlett of Denver City, and three daughters including Julia Neal of Port Arthur and Pearl Prodgen of Amarillo.
Christmas trees are being sold by the Rotary Club's Boy Scouts at the North Scout Hut next to Veterans Hall. Prices range from 1 to 6.50 dollars. The stand is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with deliveries after 4 p.m.
