Lorene Lee Wins $1200 News Campaign Prize

Lorene Lee of 519 North Fifth won the top capital prize of 1200 in the News circulation campaign ending Tuesday night. Five winners shared 2400 total, with Fleming Parker Nelson and Smith receiving 600 300 and 50 30 5 in assorted prizes. Judging for 1060 new subscriptions occurred December 20 21 22 23 24 with two plaques awarded for decorated entries.

Circling the square and a beet grower drive in Terry County

The Terry County Sugar Beet Association seeks members at 10 dollars a year to fund beet allotments in West Texas. Washington groups include the West Texas Chamber of Commerce the Texas Farm Bureau and the Hereford Beet Growers Association. An irrigation survey notes Terry County’s 675 irrigated farms 115000 irrigated acres 1300 sprinkler systems and 1300 wells with 320 butane 60 gasoline 130 electricity and 790 natural gas powered pumps as of 1960. A missing Baby Jesus doll from a First Presbyterian Church manger prompts local rumor of a prank or dog involvement. A baton twirling contest in the high school gym features regional and state champions including Sandy Bell of Clovis Bennie Evans of Lubbock and Linda Isaacs McCallister as coordinator. The Retail Merchants Association reports 25 attendees at a Monday business letter writing clinic led by Bill Butterfield of Texas Tech. Brownfield Credit Managers Club will meet December 13.

Indictments Charge Two Youths in Brownfield Slaying

The 121st District Grand Jury indicted Alfred Gonzales, 20, and Valentine Diaz, 19, on murder and armed robbery charges for the December 26 1959 robbery slaying of Lester Alee McPherson at a Brownfield service station. Bail was denied. Gonzales is jailed in Dawson County.

Funeral for Mrs J J Hair to Be in Big Spring

Mrs Mamie Hair, born 1871 in Anderson, died at 2 45 am Wednesday at her son's home in Big Spring after a long illness. Former Big Spring resident, she lived in Brownfield the past year. Services pending at Nalley Funeral Home Big Spring. Survived by two sons M B and Dudley of La Porte, a granddaughter Mrs Jerry Etter of Lubbock, and three other grandchildren. Her husband J J Hair died in 1954 after active banking roles in Big Spring. Three children preceded her in death.

Howard Funeral Held For W H Buck Howard

Final services for W H Buck Howard 88 of 417 South Third were held Tuesday in Memorial Chapel Brownfield Funeral Home with burial in Rotan cemetery. The Challis area native died Sunday night after a brief illness at his home and had lived in Terry County since 1931. He farmed near Challis until 1952 when he moved to Brownfield.

West Texas 4-H Gold Star Winners Named

Forty of 39 district 2 4-H members received Gold Star honors in Lubbock Monday night. Beverly Hendricks of Meadow and Danny Thurman Route 5 were among the Terry youths honored, joining others from 20 counties as Congressman George Mahon spoke at Memorial Hall First Methodist Church.

Brownfield Cubs Earn Multiple All-District Honors

Brownfield's football players swept six spots on the sports writers all district offensive defensive teams as Monahans and Seminole trails. Jimmy Tollett and Junior Knox led Brownfield on both units along with Glen Koch Johnny Murphy on defense. Other Cubs honored include Duane Steen Harvey Cottrell and Richard Collings narrowly missed a spot.

Community Chest Nears Goal As Contributions Reach $21,452

Contributions and pledges to Terry County Community Chest stood at 21 452 Tuesday, still nearly 5000 short of the 26350 goal. Chest workers continue efforts toward reaching the quota. Mrs Monroe Clayton secretary maintains an office in the Chamber of Commerce.

Rotary Troop Scouts Sell Christmas Trees

Boy Scout Troop 49 sponsored by Brownfield Rotary Club sells white spruce and red fir trees to fund troop work. Trees are on sale at the Boy Scout Hall next to the American Legion Hall with delivery available to homes each day including Sunday.
