County Votes Tuesday on Cotton Quota Referendum

Terry County growers will vote Tuesday in a nationwide cotton marketing quota referendum. The 1957 allotment totals 1 960 acres more than last year due to sod breaking and shifts to cotton. If quotas fail, price support drops but remains. if approved, price support ranges 75 to 90 percent with penalties for excess cotton.

Paul Baker won a Westinghouse electric blanket in Farr's Show of Shows. John Udovich from El Paso claimed the grand prize 1957 Cadillac. M. E. Wossner of Pueblo won a Hotpoint Kitchen set. Marion Wyatt of Clovis won a Bermuda trip. Mrs. W. J. Hyatt Jr. of Plainview earned a Motorola color TV. Santa arrives in Brownfield Saturday for a candy giveaway and child greetings. Downtown merchants extend hours from Dec 18 to Dec 22 for Christmas shopping.

Max Black, University of Tulsa senior and Brownfield High School alum, is the lone unanimous pick for the 1956 All Missouri Valley Conference football team as center. The co captain known as the Tron Man led the Golden Hurricanes and has pro football offers after graduation.

Farm Labor Day Set For Tuesday At Courthouse

A Farm Labor Day will be held Tuesday in the northeast courthouse basement. Texas Employment Commission head Aubrey T Jones announced the session to run from 9 a.m. to noon. A schedule for 1957 farm labor days will be announced after January. Farmers needing hands and farmhands seeking steady work are urged to attend.

Union High School Homecoming Set This Friday

Union High School hosts its annual homecoming in the gym Friday. Exes meet withregistration at 2 p.m. and coffee served. Supper runs 5 30 to 7 p.m. The basketball team plays Dawson at 7 30 p.m. Coach Kenneth Sams. Music follows with a band and a barbershop quartet. Business session and visitations close the day. Officers include Grady Davis vice president Bob Luker treasurer and Mrs James Thurman secretary.

Refugee Fund Swelled by Local Chest Gift

The National Red Cross requested Terry County Chapter raise 310 to aid Hungarian refugees entering the United States. The Terry County Community Chest contributes from its contingency fund and directs direct donations to L. J. Richardson of First National Bank.

Brownfield Lions Set Christmas Party Tuesday Night

The Brownfield Lions plan their annual Christmas party at 7 pm Tuesday in The Party House with Lions and their wives and guests attending. They will bring new and used toys to donate to Brownfield children on Christmas morning, continuing their Goodfellows charity work by gathering repairing and distributing toys each year.

Local Man Dies in Two-Car Crash West of Tatum New Mexico

Donald Dale Durham 25, Route 1, Brownfield area, dies in a two car collision ten miles west of Tatum New Mexico last Thursday. Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. J B Durham of Brownfield, a brother James Douglas, sisters Mrs. Wendell Mason and Mrs. Bob Rimer, and grandmother Mrs. Lillie Etheridge. Funeral services were held Friday at First Baptist with burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Durham had lived in the area since 1946 except for four years in the Navy. born in Clairmont. Other victims were Richard A. Simpson 21 Odessa and William R. Folsom 29 Rockdale.

Brownfield Student Wins $2000 Cornell Award for Research

Brownfield senior Richard J. Ridgway of Vexas Tech earns a $2,000 Cornell University research assistantship to study insect control at Ithaca. The grant renews annually until he earns a doctorate and exempts tuition. Ridgway, an agronomy major with a 2.49 GPA, plans a Bachelor of Science in January and joins multiple campus organizations.

Emergency Feed Sought for Terry County Farmers

Terry County seeks inclusion in a federal emergency feed program for farmers and ranchers if the county is declared a drouth disaster area. A Nov 30 letter from local agricultural groups lists 200 basic livestock herds and notes many owners cannot sustain their foundation herds due to moisture shortages and below normal rainfall. The letter cites 7.96 inches of rain to date this year.

Friends of Library Campaign For New Members Grows

Terry County Friends of the Library reports 114 members with campaign aims at several hundred. A nine member board will govern the county chapter with four officers and five elected directors. Officers include Mrs. W A Kimbrough president and Mrs. Cornelia Peters secretary. Membership dues are $1 annually and all eligible voters are urged to join.

Anderson Prichard Oil Corporation reports No 1 Waters as a Devonian discovery in central Terry County. Well flowed 266 34 barrels per day on a 64 inch choke with gas oil ratio 345 at 12 763 feet. Treatment used 500 gallons mud acid. Location 1 750 feet from north and 900 feet from west line of Section 118, Bisck D1, C&AMMR Survey, 3 miles west of Southeast Coroco Siluro Devonian Field, 84 miles southwest of Gamez townsite.

Terry's Cotton Harvest Stands at 8000 Bales

The 1956 Terry County cotton harvest is reported at about 48 000 bales with some observers banking on 92 000 bales. Aubrey Jones of the Texas Employment Commission cautions the figure is not firm.

More than 190 players are expected at the Brownfield VFW Post 6794 weekly bingo night in Veterans Hall. Post Commander Herschel McKay notes the event offers fun for Brownfield families with coffee doughnuts and soft drinks last Friday and handsome prizes for winners.

Slight Gas Show At Amerada Wildcat Near Meadow Townsite

A wildcat test op in northeast Terry County at Amerada Petroleum Company No. 1 M. D. Green logged 60 feet of slightly gas cut mud and 140 feet of salt water during a four hour open hole run to evaluate the interval from 11,139 to 11,308 feet. Formation pressures ranged from 1,010 to 1,125 pounds flowing and 3,060 pounds shut in for 15 minutes. A 2,000 foot water blanket was used. The planned Devonian tester would begin 660 feet from the section lines in Section 60, Block 4X, C&MMR Survey. No production shows yet.
