Brownfield Band led by Rob Lovett and mother earns honors

The Brownfield High School Band, directed by Rob Lovett and his mother Barbara Lovett, earned top ratings in UIL contests. Under two bands, the honors group features upperclassmen while the concert band includes most freshmen, reflecting strong student and parent support and a doubled roster from 72 to 161.

Local businesses plan Labor Day hours and closings

A Brownfield Texas page notes that most area businesses will be closed on Labor Day along with City Hall and the Terry County Courthouse. A list shows OPEN options including Alco, Anthony's, Gebo's, Sonic, and many others, while Amoco, Bayless Jewelry, First Federal Savings, First National Bank and numerous shops will CLOSE for the holiday.

Four cases disposed of in 121st District Court this week

Deb orah Kay Hamlin pleaded guilty to burglary of a building and received a three year probated sentence with $97.50 court costs $200 attorney fees a midnight curfew and other probation terms. Victoria Raul Marquez also got a three year probated sentence with $97.50 costs $200 probation fee a curfew and other conditions after pleading guilty to theft of personal property. Jesse Lopez pleaded guilty to burglary of a motor vehicle and was given a five year Texas Department of Corrections sentence. Joe F Ortiz was denied a bond reduction after a motion.

Brownfield BISD enrollment steady at 2,581 after four days

Brownfield Independent School District reports 2,581 students enrolled after four days, up 27 from 1982. High School leads gains with 643 students, while Middle School drops to 596 and Intermediate School to 401. Several elementary schools post small increases, including Colonial Heights 536 and Oak Grove 400, with Head Start and special programs noted.

Police seek Lubbock gunman in local shooting

A Lubbock man, Allen Batson, is charged with attempted murder after allegedly knocking on a East Broadway door and aiming a revolver at a Brownfield resident. The victim seized the barrel, the gun discharged striking a finger, and the man fled toward a passing patrolman as officers search for Batson.

Bowman golf tourney set for weekend at Brownfield Club

The Annual J T Bowman Partnership Golf Tourney runs Friday through Monday at Brownfield Country Club. Entry is 120 dollars per team with 48 men’s and 12 women’s teams. Play features low ball flights after round two and contests for Closest to the Pin and Long Drive for both genders. More information is available from Brownfield Country Club.

Lonnie and Grace Rhyne recognized at Old Settlers Reunion

Over 250 attended the 28th Annual Old Settlers Reunion at the American Legion Hall. Lonnie and Grace Rhyne were honored as the couple married the longest, nearing 64 years in November. They note three keys to a lasting marriage: shared faith, prayer, and work together. The Rhynes have attended all 23 reunions and remain active in church and community groups. Their son lives in Albuquerque and grandson is a doctor in Hillsborough.
