Freak accident takes life of city toddler

A Brownfield toddler, two year old Richard Perez Jr., died Saturday when he crawled under a parked Pontiac Grand Prix in a relative’s driveway. Driver Rodolfo Alcorte Curiel, 22, backed out, crushing the child. The boy was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m. at Brownfield Regional Medical Center. An autopsy was ordered. Rosary was held Monday, Mass Tuesday, with burial at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Perez was born in Lubbock. survivors include his parents, brother, and extended relatives in Brownfield.

Commissioners approve new budget and tax hike

Terry County Commissioners unanimously adopted the 1991 budget and a 25 cent property tax rate. County Judge Herb Chesshir and Auditor Alan Bayer voiced concerns on future amendments, while line item transfers were proposed to cover unexpected costs. The court also approved an investment policy, added Bobby Knight to the Airport Board, and heard plans for a Terry County Children's Assessment Center with initial startup funds and state backing to provide housing and assessment for youths ages five to eighteen.

Brownfield CC offers three fall courses with late registration

Brownfield Community College Center, under South Plains College, will keep registration open through Thursday for three fall classes at Brownfield High School. Courses include American Government Organization Monday evenings, Introduction to Sociology Thursday evenings, and Small Business Management Tuesday evenings. All three are three semester hours, with minimum enrollment 15. Seniors may apply for early admission. others must be high school graduates or hold GED. Contact James or Janelle Evans at 637-4478.

Terry pioneers celebrate reunion at 30th Pioneer Reunion

The 30th annual Terry County Pioneer Reunion at the American Legion Post drew over 250 visitors Saturday. Mayor Jack Cargill praised pioneers who settled the county, recalling droughts and cotton labor, with sons sent to war. Ringing Belles and Teresa Waters performed handbell pieces before a patriotic medley. Waters led a moment of silence for a memorial.

Cub football season tickets on sale for 1990 season

Season tickets for the 1990 Cubs varsity football games are on sale weekdays 8 am to 4 pm through Sept. 6 at the school business office 601 Tohoka Road. Price remains 15 dollars with seating priority to last year’s season ticket holders. Home games host Muleshoe, Lamesa Homecoming, Seminole, Cooper, and Slaton on listed dates.

United Way Board to Meet on August 30 in Terry County

The United Way of Terry County Board of Directors will gather at 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, at the Chamber of Commerce office to set the budget for the 1990-91 campaign year. All members are urged to attend.
