Rites Held For Dick Brownfield

Funeral services for A M Dick Brownfield were held at First Baptist Church with Rev Albert McDowell officiating. Burial was in Brownfield Cemetery. Brownfield, a 90 year old rancher, died after a heart attack at Brownfield General Hospital. He helped establish Brownfield State Bank & Trust Company and aided town growth including a railroad. Survivors include four daughters, one son, two step children, a brother, two sisters, 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Students Register Thursday as Schools Open Sept 5

Brownfield High and junior high announce staggered Thursday registrations for students from seniors to freshmen. Fees listed for P E towel and typing courses. Elementary pupils report at 9 a m. for registration under Dr Posey and Mr Russell.

Old Post Office Up For Auction

The old post office at North Fifth and Hill Streets will be sold at open auction starting 7:30 p m Tuesday. The sale will be in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas Co. Brownfield city officials led by Mayor C F E Ross will represent the city as the only known bidder.

Flag Dedication Scheduled Monday at Kendrick Memorial Library

A flag dedication ceremony will be conducted by Howard Henson Post No 269 of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary at Kendrick Memorial Library Monday at 10 a.m. The groups purchased a new flag for the library and will present it to staff after the ceremony.

Summer Band School Evening Concert At High School Lawn

The annual Summer Band School concert will be at 7 30 p m on Monday on the high school lawn. Brownfield Junior High under John Garrison opens with La Sorrella and other pieces followed by the high school band directed by Fred Smith performing the National Anthem and selections. The program concludes a three week session with an evening concert for the public.

Johnny Marsh Wins News Tip For Accident Coverage

Johnny Marsh wins a five dollar tip for reporting a major auto accident one half mile south of Mead on Monday. Five people were hospitalized at Brownfield General Hospital with four in good condition and one in fair condition. Sam Crawford and Charles Lawrence contributed a separate story with a rattlesnake and bobcat find near Ozark Mahoning.

Rites Held for Mrs Stallings in Brownfield Funeral Home

Funeral services for Mrs. R. L. Edna Stallings age 48 were conducted at 2 p m Friday at Brownfield Memorial Chapel with Rev A B Kyle officiating. Graveside rites followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. She died Wednesday in a Dallas nursing home after living in Dallas since 1963. Survivors include two daughters two step sons one sister five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Teacher Workshop Opens Monday in Brownfield High Auditorium

Frank Pollard pastor of First Baptist Church Dimmitt will speak at the opening session of the Teachers Pre School workshop at Brownfield High. The event includes school leaders, civic officials, and a get acquainted ice cream social for Terry County teachers. Brownfield School starts September 5 after a three day teacher weekend.

Sidewalk Sale brings bargains and prizes to Brownfield

Out of town visitors may feel in Wonderland as Brownfield hosts the annual Sidewalk Sale starting at 9 a.m. Merchants decorate in costumes with last two years’ themes guided by participant imagination. Drawings for $50 cash prizes occur at 11 a.m. 2 p.m. 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the courthouse lawn.

Terry County teachers invited to ice cream social

The Education and Recreation Committee of the Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will host all Terry County teachers at a 6:30 p.m. ice cream supper in Coleman Park. Dr. Tim Faulkenberry says local businessmen provide ice cream and cake for this get acquainted party. Teachers new to the system and those returning from Brontfeld Welk Union and Meadow schools are invited to attend.
