Terry County Old Settlers hold 38th annual reunion at American Legion Hall

The Terry County Old Settlers gathered for their 38th reunion in the American Legion Hall on a Saturday in August sharing a roast beef meal and honoring the oldest man and woman, longest-married couple, and farthest traveler. Gay Price, 95, and his wife Ethel were among the top honorees along with Mary Lou Sherman, Juanita Dendy, and Harvest Festival Queen candidates noted by Ann Willis, with a memorial list of over 140 area residents who died this year.

4 H awards honor Nicole Sellers and Terrence Longbrake

The 1997 98 Terry County 4 H Awards Banquet at Coleman Park Amphi theater named Nicole Sellers Gold Star and Terrence Longbrake Silver Star recipients. Sellers was honored for 11 years in 4 H with projects in shooting sports foods nutrition astronomy clothing first aid photography swine and natural resources plus state district and county contests and shows. Longbrake age under 15 earned Silver Star for five years with projects in sheep breeding stock aerospace swine health and camping, and serving as club leader, plus multiple livestock shows and health demos. New council officers were introduced including Shane Melcher as chair and Lori Newsom received special volunteer honors for Larry and Tonia Newsom.

Terry County commissioners hold lengthy budget meeting

The Terry County Commission held a full day session debating jail bed pricing for the planned Law Enforcement Center on Tahoka Road and potential contracts with Yoakum and other counties. They set $30 per day for contracted beds and $32 for non contracted use, and discussed funding the Kendrick Memorial Library with four full time staff amid potential retirements and proposals to hire a part time replacement.
