Traveler Roy M. Mears Dies of Heart Attack in Brownfield
The body of Roy M. Mears, 54, of Waco, was being returned to Waco for funeral services after a heart attack at a local Brownfield motel. Mears collapsed at Brownfield General Monday at 12:15 p.m. He is survived by his wife, who was with him at the time.

Murder charge filed in Brownfield shooting
Willie Nolan, 36, a Brownfield yard worker, was jailed on murder charges for the fatal shooting of Isaiah Jones, 24, in front of the Blue Moon Cafe. Jones died after a 22 caliber pistol bullet struck his left chest and lung. Witness accounts conflicted as Nolan said Jones had threatened him over a girlfriend and allegedly pulled a knife. Nolan remains jailed with a $5,000 bond in Terry County. Jones’ body will be sent to Zazoo, Mississippi, for funeral services. A separate Brownfield suspect, Billy Ray Swoopes, faced forgery charges after admitting to cashing a check for about $100 in merchandise. Bond set at $5,000. Two other incidents noted: theft at Melody Drive-Inn and multiple police calls for fights, disturbances, and drunkenness.
