Brownfield Council OKs slight 94 tax increase despite value drop

Brownfield City Council unanimously approved raising the effective tax rate from 52.25 to 52.94 to generate an additional 747,737 for this year’s budget. Officials say lower property values require the hike to match last year’s funding. The city roll totals over 150 million with a 9.79 million budget. The meeting also approved zone changes for blocks 9 and 10 on Tohoka Highway, the sale of a Fourth Street lot for 500, and the dedication of a five foot strip at the Brownfield Regional Medical Center yard to public use.

Texas State Fruit Named Red Grapefruit in 1993 Law

Column notes the state designating the red grapefruit as Texas official fruit by August 11, Governor Richards signing the law. The piece blends light commentary on public interest stories, media focus, and local tax rebate figures across Texas cities, with a skeptical look at overlong news cycles and a push toward sports and porch time. It cites Meadow and Terry County figures, and lists August 1993 sales tax rebates for major cities including Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, and El Paso, plus local comparisons from Andrews, Muleshoe, Dimmitt, and Lamesa. It also mentions Baby Jessica and Kimberly Mays adoption stories in contrast to lighter regional topics.
