Rites Held For Mrs Minnie B Bryant in Brownfield

Funeral services for 86 year old Mrs Minnie B Bryant were held Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ralph O'Dell officiating. She died Friday at Sloan's Convalescent Home in Lubbock. Burial followed in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include four sisters and one brother, plus four grandchildren.

Wellman Buses Return Aug 29 For School Start

Wellman school buses will run for the first time on August 29 on the same schedule as last year. Superintendent J. T. Bryant announced the plan and noted lunches will be five dollars per school month paid in advance. Students may contact Mrs. for piano or voice lessons.

Resignation of Football Coach Eustace Conwoop

Supt J P Bryant announced Conwoop has resigned to take a job with an insurance firm. He also served as assistant basketball coach. Bryant said he is accepting applications for the vacancy and will fill it soon.

Six-Man Football Debuts at Wellman Under New Coach

Bryant announced the start of football practice led by head coach Eustace Conwood with Rip Sewell assisting. Wellman prepares for six-man football its first year replacing eleven-man play. Bus drivers listed for six routes. Sewell named girls basketball coach replacing T W George.

Native Texan Pastor Othoe Stegall Led by Faith and War Service

Reverend Othoe Stegall of the Church of God recalls a 1951 car crash that nearly killed his family and notes divine protection. A World War II Air Force veteran, Stegall served in New Guinea Leyte Okinawa and Japan, then settled in Fort Worth area as an upholsterer and preacher. His wife Pearl Beauchamp, a local, and their children David Lee and Sandra Sue are part of his life story. The couple married in 1941 and he began preaching in 1949.

Union Busses to Run For Aug 29 Session

Union school opens at 9 am on August 29 with buses running at the usual time. A public assembly in the gym precedes registration. Buses will return children home by noon. regular classes start Tuesday. Faculty includes Mrs Helen Gray and others. Odus Walser named principal.

V-J Memories Ten Years On From War's End

Veterans recount memories as V-J Day approaches ten years after Japan’s surrender. John E. Wilson of 913 East Hill, a General Telephone draftsman and former Seabee, recalls Guam and Normandy duty while Kenneth Stevens of 105 West Cardwell, Merchant Marine veteran, notes four ships shot from under him. TWO FIRSTS Birth and Vaccination Papers For Enrollment

Brownfield schools require a smallpox vaccination and a birth certificate for pre school enrollment. Vaccines should be given by the family physician or City-County Health Unit before enrollment. Birth certificates must be presented at or soon after enrollment to prove the child is six by September.

Brownfield teachers begin the third annual pre school workshop Monday Aug 22 guiding a team of consultants led by Dr Richard Madden of San Diego Dr Horace Hartsell of Texas Tech and local educators will cover arithmetic problem solving testing curriculum and classroom practices through Friday The program aims to acquaint teachers with the Brownfield schools overall program and available materials while offering expert guidance and planning time for instruction.

Season Tickets On Sale For Brownfield Cubs Football

Brownfield High School begins selling season tickets for home football games to all men on Monday after reserved seats last year. Remaining tickets go on sale next Monday at the courthouse tax office. Tickets cost 6.25 and include admission to five home games. Coach Toby Greer’s Cubs start at Levelland Friday Sept 16. Jefferson Silver Foxes visit the next week.

Quarterback Club To Feed Players Parents Thursday Night

Brownfield Quarterback Club hosts all football players from junior high to varsity and their parents for a watermelon feast at Cub Stadium. Clyde Bond Jr reports new officers will be elected at Nick's Cafe tonight at 8 pm. A Texas Tech coach will speak. Serving begins about 7:30 pm.
