Library reading program ends successful summer

Kendrick Memorial Library wrapped up a record summer Camp Wanna Read with 183 of 300 participants completing the program. Elizabeth Acevedo led with 44 books, while top readers ranged from preschool to seventh grade. Reading certificates and awards will continue while supplies last.

Area schools begin new year in Brownfield and Union ISD

Brownfield CISD schedules first day for students on Wednesday August 21 with teachers returning Monday. Registration times for Brownfield Middle School span from 3 to 5:15 pm by grade with four year olds at the admin building and K through fifth grade at designated schools. Meadow Wellman districts also set Monday registration while Union ISD students start classes Wednesday August 21.

Council approves regional compromise on gas fee hike

Brownfield city council unanimously approves a 3.7 percent Energas rate increase affecting 30 South Plains cities, delivering nearly 4 million dollars yearly. Energas and local officials praise a steering committee that streamlined talks, with a potential next rate case not expected until 1993 unless taxes rise.

Combest to Tour Farms Near Brownfield in August

U.S. Representative Larry Combest of Lubbock will visit several farms around the Brownfield area on Tuesday August 20. The tour starts at 2 15 p.m. from the Terry County Conservation District Office at 201 E Hill. He will return to Lubbock for a brief visit then attend a town hall in Odessa on August 21. Brownfield to Host DPS Crime Lab Building

State Rep Jim Rudd of Brownfield announced the Legislature budgeted over 1 million dollars for a Department of Public Safety facility to house a crime lab and DPS office. The site sits east of Brownfield Regional Medical Center with 630000 in FY 1992 and 400000 for FY 1993 for operating costs.

CRTC grad praised for complete program completion

Theresia Ward, 23, graduated last week from Brownfield Regional Court Residential Treatment Center as the 20th resident to enter since Oct. 17 last year. Adult probation officer Mary Guetersloh praised her progress saying Ward learned self esteem and responsibility, with a four year probated sentence for hot check writing. Ward, native of Brackerville, attended Borger High School and later moved to Fort Worth.

Fall class registration at Brownfield High starts Aug 26

Brownfield Community College will hold fall registration 5 to 7 p.m. this Tuesday and Thursday at the west entrance of Brownfield High School for courses fully accredited through South Plains College. Classes run 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. three semester hours each, with fees around 89 dollars per course plus a 15 dollar lab fee for computer classes. Books cost 30 to 40 dollars per course. Courses include CIS 132-31 Survey of Data Processing Monday, GOV 213-30 American Government Organization Monday, CIS 133-30 Microcomputer Application Tuesday, PSY 234-30 Human Growth and Development Tuesday, HST 231-30 History of U.S. to 1876 Thursday, AA 235-01 Basic Accounting I Thursday.
