Terry County Commissioners Court met Monday to discuss needed changes and renovations for the county jail. Officials expressed concern over the upcoming budget and timelines as they plan a facelift to address facility issues.
Brownfield Cubs begin two day workouts with coach Jerry Bailey saying more competition will make making the team harder due to a large influx of players. The squad enters the season following a rough 失 last year and fresh drills show the team still finding its footing.
The Brownfield City Council will hear bids for a heavy truck to support an aerial lift for the electrical department and discuss financing for an interconnection with Southwestern Public Service. The meeting also covers an audit, contract amendment with Turner Construction, housing authority changes, and a Pioneer Natural Gas agreement.
The Terry County Pioneers Association will hold its 17th annual meeting August 27 at the American Legion Building. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a noon basket lunch for long-term residents and families, followed by a program and prizes for the oldest residents.
Terry County's 1976 petroleum production ranked 38th in value among Texas counties with $103.5 million from 12.7 million barrels of crude and $6.2 million from 8.2 million Mcf of natural gas. Employment total reached 859, while drilling activity totaled 82 wells with 73 successes and nine dry holes.
Terry County commissioners meet a short agenda then learn of the resignation planned for Jimmy McBee the assistant county agent near the end of August to start private business. They already approved a replacement for Jim Foy and will review jail standards issues and a welding rig bid.
Congressman George Ma notes that Congress took a major step last Friday toward final enactment of a new four year program for the 1978 crop. Senate and House conferees resolved differences between separate measures with a projected loan rate of 51c and a target price of 3.05 per bushel for wheat, plus a 2.10 loan rate. The bill also includes 1977 crop provisions for wheat and corn, with target and loan prices, and a minimum procurement rate of 13 percent per pound.
