Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt. This week’s headlines recount NASA setbacks as valve and engine issues hobble a nonflying shuttle fleet stalled for 20 months. A WWII era airplane discovery adds a another note on aerospace history.
Brownfield records July as a notably wet month with 4.66 inches of rain, including 2.45 inches on July 8 surpassing the area's average monthly rainfall. Day by day totals show scattered showers from the 1st to the 25th, with temperatures peaking at 96 and dipping to 58, marking a damp, mild spell for Terry County.
Brownfield Chamber of Commerce directors outlined plans for Aug 13 Super Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. around the town square with refreshments and entertainment. They urged all area businesses to join in and offered space to non square merchants. The board noted improved finances after a bank loan and late dues refunds, and discussed upcoming Harvest Festival ticket sales and a fishing tournament co sponsored by KKTC FM. They also discussed inviting Dr Paul Nipping of Texas Tech for a local program and potential joint meetings with civic clubs.
Juan Rivera, 52, named his alleged attackers before dying after a Thursday stabbing in the 900 block of East Cardwell. Police expect warrants by Friday night as Chief J T Churchwell says investigators will run laser fingerprint identifications on the weapon and file charges later.
Terry County schools prepare for the 1988 football season with two a day workouts. Brownfield Cubs schedule 8 am to 9 30 am and 10 30 am to 1 pm with scrimmages against Levelland and Littlefield. Meadow Broncos start at 7 am with a 6 pm scrimmage against Spur as Sterling City visits. Homecoming plans noted.
Nominations are open for four Terry County agricultural honors to be announced at the Sept. 15 Terry County Farm Tour. Nominations due by Aug. 31, with decisions by Sept. 1. Eligible awards include Outstanding Farm Family Agribusinessman of the Year Dryland Farmer of the Year and Outstanding Young Farmer.
Lee Rowden started at tailback and led the West with 69 yards on 19 carries as Texas Six-Man High School All-Star Football Game in Stephenville produced an 8-6 victory over the East. He credited defense as the story, while East rusher Jeff Pierce gained 81 yards.
