Terry County Considers Hospital Purchase Proposal

A public meeting is set for Tuesday night at 8 to discuss Terry county buying Treadaway Daniels Hospitals for 250000. The Feasibility Committee will present two months of findings and a petition for a special election could be pursued if turnout is favorable.

Wellman student named Kuykendall Scholarship winner

Bill Tom Goza of Wellman is named winner of the Kuykendall Scholarship worth 200 for freshman expenses at Texas Tech. A 1955 Wellman High School graduate, Goza scored highly in English and math courses, led student groups, captained the Wildcats, and earned multiple honors including Good Citizenship and Mr. Wildcat.

SPPA to Fund Five Texas Tech Journalism Scholarships

The South Plains Press Association and member papers announce five $100 freshman journalism scholarships at Texas Tech. One by SPPA and four underwritten by Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Brownfield News-Herald Slaton Slatonite and Gaines County News. Scholarships awarded on a hometown basis with internships and campus reporting pay.

Church of Christ Minister Preaching Is A Family Matter

Holland Boring Jr new associ ate minister of Crescent Hill Church of Christ comes from a family of preachers. He and his wife and 15 month old daughter Pamela Gay reside at 901 Apt D East Reppte after moving from Fort Worth where he served as associate minister of the Southside Church. He conducts two young peoples Classes and plans to add more with emphasis on vocal music teaching. Born in San Antonio he lived across Texas as his father a minister moved between churches. The family settled in Robbins town long enough for him to graduate from Farm High School. He worked part time as a grocery clerk and preached at neighboring churches on Sundays. Sports are among his interests being a former head coach of football basketball baseball and track.

Voters approve county bond measures in Gaines and Andrews

Gaines county voters approved a 700000 special election three to one with 500 votes. Andrews county passed a 1762000 school expansion program with 208 voters at the polls and a 425000 bond for courthouse improvements set for August. Also notes on highway right of way in Hocney and local sports and community items.

Legume Planting Talk Guides Four-County AWA Meeting

Jesse D. Jenkins urged successive winter legume plantings at the Four-County Agricultural Workers Association gathering in Lamesa. The group endorsed Aug 15 to Sept 15 as planting window and approved vetch and Dixie winter peas with specific seeding rates and inoculation advice. They also advised fertilizing with 16 20 1 or 11 48 0 and noted similar guidelines for guar, millet, and cotton with targeted acre rates.

School Board Sets Yearlong Study On Integration Policy

Brownfield schools will continue through the 1955 56 year under the same segregation program as in the past. The board will study integration options and post period policies while considering Supreme Court guidance. A public hearing on the 1955 56 budget is set for Aug 15 at 1 50 in the high school and football tickets go on sale Aug 15 for last year holders, then Aug 22 to the public.

Polio Vaccine Completion Hit 546 in Terry County

The Salk polio program wrapped up Friday with 546 children finishing the series, from 769 first shots. County Health Nurse Viola Simmons thanked many helpers including local graduate nurses, March of Dimes volunteers, and Randall PTA members led by Mrs. Barton Evans and Mrs. A P Cates.

New FHA Supervisor Assumes Duties in Terry County

George Deaton took over as supervisor of the Farmers Home Administration in Terry County on Monday replacing Bob Land who moved to become one of FHA’s 31 area supervisors in Texas. Deaton, 27, and his wife Nora Jeane recently came from San Saba where he was assistant FHA supervisor for ten months. The Deatons have also lived in Tohoka and are familiar with West Texas. Deaton is a 1949 East Texas State Teachers College graduate with a BS in agriculture and has Smith Hughes training in agricultural education from Sam Houston State Teachers College. He served two years in Korea after teaching at Van Alstyne and will reside at 206 West Cardwell.

Chamber Plans to Organize Community Chest

Chamber of Commerce directors voted to make the Junior Chamber president a perpetual board member. President B. F. Hutson reported Alvin Davis, current Jaycees president, will join the directors at the next meeting to coordinate activities.

Pre-School Health Round-up Scheduled by Randal PTA

Randal Parent-Teacher Association hosts a Health Round-up health clinic for pre-school children on Aug 8 and 9 at the South Plains Health Unit. Morning and afternoon slots 9-12 and 1-4 with an accompanying adult required. A dental clinic accompanies the check-up with two local dentists donating services.

Bootlegger Fined $200 In Terry County Court

County Judge Herbert Chesshir accepted a guilty plea on bootlegging charges from one man and fined him $200. Two others are free on bond. Leroy Hubbard was arrested this week by Deputy Harold Pharr on two counts possession of beer and gin for sale and sale of whiskey and is out on bond.

Presbyterians Start Park and Permits Beach $1 724 020

Thundershowers in Terry County boost crop outlook with estimates doubling toward 60 000 bales from 30 000. Building activity rises with July permits totaling 86 150 and nine new homes, plus plans for Presbyterian Park south of the church, landscaping and public access. Architects due Oct 1 PM to be hired January.
