Hand Brothers VEW to host District meet

Hand Brothers VFW Post 6794 will host the District 7 convention this weekend with events starting 5 p.m. Saturday for early registration and a 9 p.m. public dance. Sunday includes 9 10 a.m. registration, 10 a.m. memorial service, church, lunch at noon, and a follow up business meeting. The delegation includes James P. Montgomery, a WWII and Korean War veteran, addressing the group. District 7 covers over 2,200 members from Brownfield Denver City Lamesa Levelland See VFW.

Extra Years of Zest Senior Citizens Club Opens in 1976

XYZ Senior Citizens Club at 101 S. D across from Brownfield Middle School serves 431 members aged 55 plus and operates from a former health district building. Director Evone Spears notes donations come from members and bake sales in May and December while board treasurer T A Wartes has served since the start.

C of C fish tournament scheduled in Brownfield

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce hosts the second annual fishing tournament from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday August 12 at Gillham Pond. Entry is limited to 200, with registration starting August 1 at 221 Lubbock Rd. Prizes include a $25 gift certificate from Bayless Jewelry, a $100 savings bond from Brownfield State Bank, a $50 gift certificate from City Fruit Stand, and a wrist watch from F&S Pharmacy among other sponsored rewards.

Local teachers placed on career ladder at BCISD meeting

Four Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District teachers were advanced to Levels II and III on the district career ladder. Susan Mason and Beth Hawkins are Level III while Jane Pollard and Mary Sue Ragsdale are Level II. Assistant superintendent Jack Pinson noted state funds are tight but expect funds to be available next year. Librarian Irene Paddack praised Kendrick’s summer reading program with 65 participants and lists can be submitted until school begins. Pictured are Chad Sales, Tito Arias, Leticia Morin, and others.
