Democrats and Republicans prepare for weekend primary. Absentee votes show 162 Democrats and six Republicans in Terry County, with overall turnout likely higher than surrounding counties. Corrections note: parcel post delivery will not occur within the city on Wednesdays.
Jane Weiss and Wanda Andrews lead the third annual Miss South Plains Pageant at Brownfield High School auditorium, with Weiss sponsored by Xi Theta Theta Jane and Andrews by the Distributive Education Club. Weiss, editor of the yearbook and a student leader, will sing a talent piece. Andrews may perform a vocal number. Deadline May 15 for entries. pageant May 2 is slated for 8 p.m. in the Brownfield High School gym.
The Brownfield NEWS urges voters to choose six incumbent candidates in Texas statewide and congressional races. It endorses Governor Connally Lieutenant Governor Preston Smith Attorney General Waggoner Carr U S Senator Ralph Yarborough U S Representative George Mahon State Senator H J Blanchard, highlighting records in industry, education, finance, and governance.
In the Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District board meeting Monday night Paul Farrar was chosen president for the coming year succeeding Billie Moore. Carron Collier was re-elected vice president, James Thurman secretary, and John McFarland became vice secretary. The session also addressed delinquent tax collection with Hackney and Crawford hired to collect taxes at 15 percent of receipts after May 1. O L Pounds resigned as Assessor-Collector, effective June 30 1964, and the board accepted the notice with praise for his performance.
Dense but scattered thundershowers through Thursday night bring precipitation around half an inch or less. Temperatures hover near 25 degrees above normal with typical highs near 78 and lows near 50.
The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce launched a two day membership campaign against Andrews with an early kickoff in the Director's Room of the local office. President Harry Elam said Brownfield accepts the challenge and expects a favorable end result tomorrow evening. The group of about 20 will report progress by telephone at 5 pm. today as Andrews prepares to respond tomorrow at the same hour.
