Neighbors Help In Union Community After death of Frank Dixon

Neighbors gathered Thursday to prepare Frank Dixon’s fields for spring planting after his death from a heart seizure on April 16 at age 52. Group members supplied tractors and noon meals with help from Lester Short and others. Farmers Co-Op Station provided tractor gas. Dixon, who farmed on Route 5, died while driving a tractor. his widow survives.

Terry County Livestock Show Nets $21 000 From Sale and Prizes

The Terry County Junior Livestock Show raised over 21 000 dollars from swine and calf sales plus prize money. Prize funds totaling 3 700 came from the Jaycees and Terry County Young Farmers with donations from 185 Brownfield and Terry firms and individuals. Additional gifts came from Goodpasture Grain First National Bank Brownfield State Banks and Terry County Farm Bureau. Showmanship and awards covered calves swine and fat steers with donor likes Burnett Kiwanians Alvin G Davis Trophy R N McClain and Dennis Q Lilly. General superintendents Weldon Mason and Bruce Griffith led the 18th annual show.

Senior to Austin Meet in State Interscholastic League

Brownfield High School senior David McDonald will compete in extemporaneous speaking at the Texas Interscholastic League State Meet in Austin. The event draws hundreds of high school participants across track and literary contests, after McDonald won the mid-April Lubbock regional with top honors.

Chamber Directors Convene in May Session at 6:30 A M

Brownfield Chamber of Commerce directors meet at 6 30 a m Wednesday for the May business session. Pres L G Smith says the agenda is full and attendance is urged. In Lubbock he speaks on federal aid to elementary and secondary schools and the terms of its justification.

May 5 Primaries Polling Sites Announced in Terry

County chairmen for Republicans James Evans and Democrat John Kendrick list 23 polling boxes for the May 5 primaries. Locations span City Hall, Oak Grove Elementary, Meadow School, Union School, and more with election judges named for each site. Absentee voting ends at 5 p.m. in the County Clerk's office.

Five Mile Chase Lands Farm Hand In City Jail

Eusevio E. Olivarez, 24, was fined 100 dollars on 11 traffic tickets after a chase involving two police cars and a 1957 Plymouth. He could not pay and was jailed. Tickets listed disobeying a lawful order, no license, running stop signs and red lights, no yielding to police signals, speeding.

Babe Ruth Tryouts Set For Five Thirty Later This Week

Little League graduates and newcomers may try out for six Babe Ruth League teams at 5 30 p m on Thursday and Friday at Babe Ruth League Park. Boys ages 13 to 15 not yet on a team must attend and sign up with H B Virgil Crawford. Coaches and league officials draft at 7 30 p m Friday at First National Bank conducted by Joe Stevens. Fifteen games on schedule May 24 to July 15.

Bachelor of Divinity Degree Earned by Nicholson at Golden Gate

Donald Ray Nicholson of Brownfield joined eight fellow graduates as Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary awarded the bachelor of divinity degree in Mill Valley near San Francisco. Nicholson, son of Mr and Mrs A R Nicholson, previously earned a Hardin-Simmons University degree in Abilene. Baccalaureate speaker was Dr Harold K Graves president of the seminary. Commencement address delivered by Rev Herman E Wooten of Richland Baptist Church Richland Washington and president of the Oregon Washington Baptist Convention.

Party Chairmen To Visit Jaycee Club

Terry County Democratic and Republican party chairmen John J. Kendrick and James A. Evans will speak at the weekly Jaycee luncheon Monday at noon in The Party House. They will outline city, precinct, state and national level work and preview Saturday's primary election.

Buccaneer Festival Concert at Brownfield High School

Brownfield High School Band presents The Buccaneer Festival Concert at 8 pm in the high school auditorium under Fred Smith. Proceeds fund the trip to Corpus Christi for Buccaneer Music Festival. Junior High Contest Band directed by Thomas Wright also performs. The band has recent firsts in concert and sight-reading at regional UIL events in Lubbock and the Lamesa Band Festival.
