The Meadow school held its annual athletic banquet with fried fowl and fellowship. Wayland College coach Clif Ozman gave a humorous talk praising students, while a light rain dampened spirits and city health officials pushed for full compliance with a new garbage can ordinance to curb disease.
The Madrigal Singers from Brownfield High School performed for 18 members and one guest, Hartsell Blake, as Jim Casey directed. The group entertained at the Seleta Jane Clubhouse during a Kiwanis dinner meeting chaired by Don Hendley with Friday set for a Boys and Girls Committee committee meeting on sponsoring a trip for local boys to Camp Gene Ashby near Mason.
Rev. Jack Garrett presented a slide program at the Brownfield Jaycees regular session Monday. President Rex Bailey presided over the luncheon at the Party House as the slide show illustrated a series of colored slides.
An editor's note reviews 1963 Terry County agricultural data. The county covers 574,720 total acres with 481,949 cultivated and 296,085 non irrigated. There are 1,234 farms, 675 irrigated, and 1,500 irrigation wells. The number of farms has declined from 1,486 in 1935 to 971 in 1959, while farm size grows, with 82 farms over 1,000 acres in 1959. Principal crops are grain sorghum and cotton, with dry cropland dominating and pasture, wheat, alfalfa, and vegetables making up the rest.
Meadow High School held its 1964 65 Athletic Banquet in the cafeteria with coach Chiff Ozman of Wayland College delivering the keynote. Linda Jordan received the Fighting Heart Award and led ceremonies. Don Carroll and Jerry Hester also earned Fighting Heart honors for football and basketball.
Terry County commissioners unanimously authorized time warrants not to exceed 10000 for bleacher construction at the rodeo arena funded from the Public Building and Improvement Fund. The meeting also approved Wellman Water project work with liability caveats, discussed show barn repairs, and approved related transfers and expenses.
The Brownfield Optimist Club KKUB and Brownfield News announce that the Brownfield Boys Club drive continues this week and will end this Saturday. Donations of any amount are welcomed via club members or the local news office.
The Brownfield School Board of Trustees approved bids for equipment maintenance library services and gym seats and accepted quoted prices for electric typewriters and teaching supplies. Superintendent O R Douglas discussed site options for a new administration building desegregation compliance and future funding implications.
Terry County Chapter of the American Cancer Society has received 900 dollars from its annual crusade reported by district director Mrs H D Smith Jr. Only one county chairman has reported by 10 a m today mop up operations will continue and those who have not contributed are urged to mail their gifts to the South Plains Health Unit care of Mrs Fred Turner treasurer. Last year's donations topped 1 000 dollars at this stage and organizers hope to reach that total before final tally.
Police and sheriff records show a surge of thefts including an impact wrench from Shorty Collier Service at 501 So ist worth 135 dollars. Batteries from irrigation engines and a Pat Sol truck were stolen. Boat parts, a timing light, and tools from stations were reported missing. Several arrests followed, with bonds up to 2500 dollars. Wrecks include two vehicle collisions at Tohoka Road and 8th Street Seagraves Road.
Services for Hoyt J. Wheeler fifty were held in Brownfield Memorial Chapel with Rev. Lewis Clegg and Rev. P. A. Powell officiating. Burial followed in Terry County Cemetery. Wheeler, a heavy equipment operator, died Sunday in Galveston. Survived by wife four sons Hoyt in Plainview James in Los Angeles Robert John all of Brownfield. three daughters Mrs. Joe W. May of Lubbock Rita Joe Ruthie Ann. one sister Mrs. Ruth Lofton Garri son. eight grandchildren.
