Capt Joshua Knight aboard the brig Speed reports sighting a sea serpent about twenty five miles off Cape Cod. He observed a hundred feet of the creature exposed at times, with a long motionless body and head rising four to five feet, plus two bulging sections behind the head and near the tail. He watched with a spyglass and saw the eyes clearly in calm weather.
George Watts and S H Watts two youths were found with far more money than expected. Arrested by Merrit and Homan they confessed to burying a sum in a tobacco box out of town. Police recovered 750 dollars and a further 150 later, tied to 900 dollars of 1100 stolen from David Pye. They were committed to Bridewell.
