Brookshire Ground Crewman Discovers Palau Plants
Private First Class K. H. Goode from Brookshire Texas found unusual plants near his Palau camp. He transplanted them in front of his tent and later found a booklet describing tropical growth. The plants reach 12 to 15 feet and have edible bulb-like roots when cooked.

A H Muske Buried Sunday Afternoon
A H Muske 72 died in a Houston hospital Saturday evening after several days illness. He had run a furniture and undertaking business in the county since 1914 and served on the local school board. He aided highway 90 construction and supported his church. Services were Sunday at 4 p m at the Methodist church. Interment followed in Pattison cemetery. Survived by widow two daughters two sons three grandchildren a brother and a sister. Pallbearers named. out of town friends attended.

Miss Eddie Erleene Rapsilver of Brookshire was elected secretary of the newly organized English Club for the forthcoming year at Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville. She is a sophomore at the college. Cpl. Lester Taylor is home on a 15 day furlough visiting his parents in Pattison and will return to camp Saturday.

Authority to begin construction for Waller County refrigeration locker plants was granted on October 27. Building must be under construction by November 10 and equipment purchases await after January 1, 1945. Rural Electrification Administration loans were authorized in August.

4 H Club Boy Wins 75 Dollar Calf in County Contest
Virgil Foster a 15 year old from five miles south of Hempstead won a 75 prize registered Jersey heifer in a county wide 4 H Club gilt contest. He also plans to breed the gilt in November and donate a select gilt pig next spring to another winner.

Grand jury scrutiny and local crime case updates in Waller County
The grand jury met Monday to conclude an investigation into crime in Waller County. Albert Byrd and Chas Byrd received five-year sentences for breaking in and robbing O. D. Braun’s store in Waller, with accomplices Sherer and Osborn to face trials in other counties. Jury commissioners for the spring term include C. H. Urban, Ed Schultz, and J. M. Pattison. Also noted is Stefka’s moccasin snake bite near Sunnyside causing swelling and leg injury, treated at Hempstead hospital.

Mandamus Hearing Set for December 1944 Stock Election
A mandamus suit filed in the 9th district court by J. W. Reid and more than 100 freeholders of Waller County seeks to compel county officials including Geo. O. Crump and county commissioners to call a county-wide stock election. The hearing is set for December 6, 1944, at 10:00 A.M. before Judge W. B. Browder in Hempstead.
