The Revival at the M. B. Church led by Rev Geo O Cravy drew good nightly crowds. Memorial Day observances requested by President Wilson closed many businesses and sent people to church services, aided by Rev A B Chapman who coordinated the closures.
Farmers report splendid crop condition and expect abundant corn if rain comes soon. They say prospects for the cotton are the most flattering this area has seen in several years.
Government experts estimate over 700 000 extra acres of potatoes planted last year as the United States aims to move potato stocks into trade channels. A tested Food Administration recipe for potato soup uses three potatoes milk onion butter substitute flour salt celery salt pepper cayenne parsley.
Pattison raised 722.25 for the Red Cross in the recent drive. W D Jones and G G Baronian sent 729.95 to the County Chairman L D Anmsler of Hempstead, reflecting the townspeople’s ready spirit despite a late start.
G E Bains and wife and Dr L W Bains were business visitors to Houston Thursday. W L Rogers Jr and family spent Thursday with relatives in Houston. B D Leggett made an over land trip to Fort Worth this week to visit relatives. Mrs J B Horlik and daughter Mrs Will Baethe have returned home after Fort Worth visit. Mrs W D Mills visited her parents in Houston last Monday and Tuesday. H D Cooper was in Houston.
The Second Red Cross War Fund drive closed Monday night with Brookshire raising well over the $1,000 goal. Over 8534.15 was added, showing broad support from white and Black residents. An omission in Ora Ford’s name is acknowledged and corrections are requested for any other errors.
Tuesday night regu lar drill of the Texas Cavalry with member attendance noted. Rosebud vistors include Tugo Seidel business tour and bloom prospects. Galveston trip by C L Davis wife Ruth and A J Robertson last Sunday. D O Williams family in Houston with Mra P Hammerling. Max Kellner and Louis Rudolph in Houston on Wednesday for business. A Agopian, longtime assistant Cashier at Farmers' State Bank, departed last Monday for Camp Travis to join the National Army as a private. Virginia Mills will replace him, assisted by Marie Entrop. Armanah became Captain of a Hempstead squad that also left for Camp Travis. George Pattison gifted a horse to G G Baranian to be sold for the Pattison Branch Red Cross. W T Silliman visited Sealy for business last Wednesday.
The county reports amounts raised across precincts for the Second Red Cross War Fund. Precinct totals range from 168.50 to 2,127.40 with a county sum of 6,741.43 against a 5,350.00 goal. Pledges for this precinct add 129.00.
